G140: Red Sox 8, Rangers 1

Red Sox - 010 402 001 - 8 12 0
Rangers - 000 000 001 - 1 6 1
With the Rays losing 6-4 in Toronto, the Red Sox are now only 2.5 GB in the East -- the closest they have been to first place since July 29.

Beckett was dominant (5-4-0-0-7, 80). Three of those four hits came in the fourth inning; the first runner was erased on a double play.

Lowell homered in his first AB, and added a two-run single and a one-run double. Coco Crisp had three hits and three RBI. He and Jacoby Ellsbury hit back-to-back triples on consecutive pitches in the sixth inning.

Jason Varitek had two singles and a walk and Jason Bay doubled and walked twice. Dustin Pedroia doubled in the first inning, but then was quiet until a walk in the eighth. The only Sock to not reach base was David Ortiz.

Despite the high score, Francona went with Manny Delcarmen, Justin Masterson, and Hideki Okajima out of the pen.

Both Central contenders won their games by a 10-2 score: White Sox over the Angels and the Twins over the Tigers. The Mariners beat the Yankees 3-1; Brandon Morrow, in his first start after 100 relief appearances, came within four outs of throwing a no-hitter.

***

Globe:
First baseman Sean Casey, third baseman Mike Lowell and tonight's starting pitcher Josh Beckett have officially been activated off of the disabled list ...

Casey (neck) has not played since Aug. 19, Lowell (right oblique) has not played since Aug. 12 and Beckett (elbow) has not pitched since Aug. 17.
Since the All-Star break, Lowell is hitting .187/.253/.253 in 22 games/99 PA, all of them in either the #4 or #5 spot. I hope Tito stops batting him in front ahead of Jason Bay -- .305/.356/.500 in 29 games/132 PA in a Red Sox uniform.

***

Josh Beckett (4.34, 104 ERA+) / Kevin Millwood (4.84, 89 ERA+)

Tony Massarotti has moved from the Herald to the Globe (many of Boston's sportswriters have been playing musical chairs recently) and he discusses Josh Beckett's return from the disabled list tonight. He says Beckett will be limited to 55-60 pitches. Also expected back tonight are Mike Lowell and Sean Casey (and maybe Kevin Youkilis).

The Herald has been hit hard this summer, with Mazz to the Globe, Rob Bradford to WEEI and Jeff Horrigan to retirement. The Hartford Courant will cut its original reporting on the Red Sox after this season, leaving Jeff Goldberg out in the cold. And Gordon Edes recently left the Globe for Yahoo.

Amalie Benjamin has a brief wrap-up of how Boston's minor league playoff teams are doing:
After Pawtucket and Portland lost Wednesday in the openers of their postseason series, the Sox affiliates split yesterday. Portland lost its second game in the Eastern League playoffs to host Trenton, 4-3. Starter Clay Buchholz allowed three runs on six hits with one walk in six innings. He struck out nine and got a no-decision. That series continues tonight at Hadlock Field in Portland, Maine, at 7 as the Sea Dogs try to avoid a sweep in the best-of-five series. Host Pawtucket pulled out Game 2 of the International League series against Scranton/Wilkes-Barre (the Yankees' Triple A affiliate), 3-1. Jason Lane and Jeff Corsaletti hit home runs, making Devern Hansack a winner. Game 3 is tonight at 7:05.
More on Hansack's fantastic outing (six no-hit innings) here. ... Could someone send this link to Hank Steinbrenner? ... Great picture here.

On The Big Board:
Rays/Blue Jays at 7
Tigers/Twins at 8
Angels/White Sox at 8
Yankees/Mariners at 10
East
Rays 85 53 --- Magic #: 21
Red Sox 82 57 3.5

Wild Card
Red Sox 82 57 --- Magic #: 18
Twins* 77 63 5.5
Yankees# 75 65 7.7
*: The White Sox (78-61, 4 GB Boston) lead the Central.
#: Included simply for laughs. Any combination of Tampa Bay wins and New York losses totalling 13 eliminates the Yankees from winning the East. Any combination of Red Sox wins and New York losses totalling 16 eliminates the Yankees from winning the wild card. YED is nigh!

I think if one of the things we dislike so much about some religious people is their judgemental-ness, then we shouldn't be judgemental against them. If they don't bother me and don't ask me to live their life, then why should I care.

(Of course when they try to impose their beliefs on our laws, that's a very different story.)

laura k said...

Bye Andy. G'night.

later andy.

Nick, what was your comment for Andy?

After a couple of seasons, all of us will sound exactly alike.

That would be interesting!

We have not been closer than 3 GB since July 29.

And before then? That was brief, wasn't it?

Lo-Lev MDC. He'll probably strike out the side.

No.

Between 2 GB and .5 GA for most of July (10th-29th).

We were 5 GB on July 7.

It is pretty amazing that the Rays have held the lead for so long, considering their everyday lineup and injuries. Good pitching goes a long way. The 1950 Red Sox were the last team to hit over .300 as a team (and that was with the pitchers batting). They finished a distant third. The pitchers were terrible. Ted Williams was injured in the All Star Game and missed most of the second half of the season. They still hit .300.

laura k said...

Nick, yeah, it's very cool. I am used to wheelchair racers and basketball players and tennis players - sit-skiers - any game you can think of - but this is the first time I've seen stuff like this.

One guy I'm talking to next week races motocross. (Also how he became disabled.) But he's still riding!

Great to see Josh look so sharp.

I saw Dmitri Young of the Nationals last night, playing for the Vermont Lake Monsters. Mighty have fallen or what?

laura k said...

Say hello to Church St for me. Burlington is a nice place.

nick said...

Have they posted a sign at the city limits yet?

Benjamin said...

So Masterson to close out the 8th and 9th?

A Conformer said...

Millions of dead cops today. The good kind of millions of dead cops.

laura k said...

Lake Monsters! Good name. Who's the ML affiliate?

A Conformer said...

So Masterson to close out the 8th and 9th?

I think Pauley or Smith make more sense.

Lord Lynch said...

Tri-City's pitcher started with an ERA of 16+. His one outing was 1.3 innings, with 7 WALKS!

He was a bit better last night.

laura k said...

Have they posted a sign at the city limits yet?

It is only a matter of time.

Lord Lynch said...

Redsock - it is a really nice town. Really like it.

Benjamin said...

Lake Monsters are a Nats affiliate. (Used to make more sense when they were the Expos.)

laura k said...

Very nice place to visit. Probably nice to go to college/univ in.

I went into a British goods store in Freeport, Maine today, where they sold a bunch of mainstream food shipped directly from the UK in their packages, like Mars bars and chocolate biscuits and Walkers crisps, etc. Very neat to see that.

We saw a Reds affiliate up there, I think. It doesn't always make sense.

Baltimore has a team in Ottawa. (Is it still Baltimore? Used to be.)

I wonder if Dimitri Young is there for a rehab stint, considering the other minor league teams' seasons should be over.

AA affiliates can be put anywhere, because promotions from AA are usually to AAA and are more predictable. Having to put a AAA prospect on a plane every time a player goes down must get tiresome.

A Conformer said...

FY and Funix on the all-fuck team.

allan said...

why masterson and not one of the dregs?

Benjamin said...

Also the Lake Monsters used to be the Vermont Expos until a couple years ago; naturally they changed it.

Benjamin said...

This team can hit dregs. Remember the Zink game?

laura k said...

I think the Sox are unusual to have their AAA team so nearby. A few others do (Seattle, Detroit) but I think most don't.

laura k said...

The all-fuck team!!

Oh man, we gotta fill that one out. You know, Joe Screw, Jose Boink, Carlos Fornicate...

A Conformer said...

I might be wrong, but I think Masterson has been used a lot on mop up. Why? Especially with both Smith and Pauley in the bullpen.

Amy said...

Hi, everyone. I miss the game threads. Being back at work and teaching at night sucks. And tonight we were with my folks.

Did Beckett do as well as it seems, or did the Rangers just fold?

I think they have him on some sort of schedule

laura k said...

Hi Amy. Beckett was very good. Also Lowell donged and doubled on his 1st game back.

allan said...

The all-fuck team!!

We need Dick Pound in some capacity.

Amy said...

That's good to hear about both Beckett and Lowell. Maybe we can actually get everyone healthy now and win the rest of our games.

Yes, I continue to dream.

Jere said...

Dude on Dodgers needs triple for cycle, hits one to wall in right center. CF bobbles, and the guy takes this huge turn at second even though the ball is already to the cutoff man a few feet from the infield dirt. Has to pull up and gets caught in the middle, and is tagged out. So you know these guys know what's needed for a cycle. At least that guy. Good for him his team's up 6-0.

This is Morrow's first start ever! After 100 relief apps.
