G89: Red Sox 6, Yankees 4

Red Sox - 003 030 000 - 6 12 0
Yankees - 300 000 001 - 4 6 1
Mike Lowell's three-run home run in the fifth broke a 3-3 tie and carried the Red Sox through a 88-minute rain delay and a win in the second game of the MFY series. The first trio of Boston runs scored in the third on Lowell's sac fly and Kevin Youkilis's triple.

You must see highlights of Yook's triple (here). It was hit to deep left and Johnny Damon raced back. He leapt at the wall, had the ball hit in and then pop out of his glove. As Damon fell to the warning track, the ball bounced a couple of times on the top of the outfield fence, and stayed balanced on top before falling and rolling several feet away from Damon. Game pictures here (and here), including this one:

The bullpen snuffed out two rallies. In the seventh, Hideki Ojakima left the bases loaded with two outs for Manny Delcarmen, who got Alex Rodriguez to hit into a force play. Then, in the eighth, after MDC walked Jason Giambi and retired Jorge Posada on a fly out, Javier Lopez came in and ended the inning with one pitch -- a double play grounder from (Whatta ya know!) Robbie Cano.

Beckett (6-4-3-2-4, 102) had a rough first inning -- two doubles and a walk among the first four batters -- but settled down, retiring the side in the second and third on 20 total pitches. A fantastic running-and-sliding catch into foul territory from Jacoby Ellsbury saved Beckett's bacon in the fourth, when he left the bases loaded.

In the two games of the series, New York is 2-for-24 with runners on base. It should be 1-for-23, but Derek Jeter was credited with a double although his fly ball to left-center was clearly caught by Coco Crisp. That should have ended the game, but it brought Bobby Abreu to the plate as the potential tying run.

Abreu flew to deep center (truping however many Yankee fans remained) to end the game (again). Give Jonathan Papelbon an asterik for a one-inning, five-out save. He had struck out Brett Gardner -- the batter before Jeter -- for what should have been the third out, but Gardner was awarded a walk instead.

***

Rain delay (tarp out at 4:20) in the top of the 8th!
Lugo on first and none out against Farnsworth.

***

Josh Beckett (3.65, 117 ERA+) / Darrell Rasner (4.42, 91 ERA+)

Dear Red Sox:

Today is George Steinbrenner's 78th birthday. Ruin it.

Thanking you in advance ...

in the first 3 innings, he went to 3 balls only once and 2 balls only once.

Shit, Babe Ruth is my all-time fave player. Then Pedro.

laura k said...

ruth is like the jordan of baseball

LOL

The more you know about Ruth, the more impressive he becomes.

And you can learn a lot about Ruth and his amazing antics by reading....

nick said...

mom feeds him some of his best lines!

andy said...

Laura, my mother will be with me for a total of 4 days. for 3 hours a day for a total of 12 hours I can spend with you happy people talking about man love with the boy.

I wonder if the boy is grass fed.

laura k said...

...this great book!

allan said...

ruth is like the jordan of baseball

ummmm, no.

no.

laura k said...

let's go doc, give us your best medsin

andy said...

Manuel is being Manny finally.

laura k said...

Grass-fed boy! Now that I gotta try. :)

allan said...

he may not be grass-fed, but he is free range.

laura k said...

Laura, my mother will be with me for a total of 4 days. for 3 hours a day for a total of 12 hours I can spend with you happy people talking about man love with the boy.

I agree. When my mom visits, I need every little break that I can get. Love her though I do.

andy said...

who is the Jordan of baseball then? I mean that in an all encompassing way. When you think of the NBA you think Jordan right? When you think MLB don't you think Babe Ruth?

laura k said...

MIKEY!!!!!!!!!

DOCTOR DONG!!!!!!! WE LOVE YOU!!!!!!

nixon33 said...

MEDSIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

nick said...

that's some serious medsin!

allan said...

THERE'S SOME MOTHERFUCKING RX FOR YA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

andy said...

When I think failing minor leaguers I also think Jordan

Joe Grav said...

yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

andy said...

Take 3 of these and call me in the 7th.

allan said...

who is the Jordan of baseball then?

Mays?

laura k said...

I think Allan is objecting to putting Jordan in Ruth's class. Jordan may be the Ruth of basketball, I don't know.

Ruth changed the way the game was played. The entire game had to adapt around him.

And can you imagine the greatest hitter of many generations also being a great pitcher???

And all that in between getting drunk, fucking everyone in sight, and getting into fights with everyone he didn't fuck?

andy said...

The youk slide is growing. He needs to trim the bird nest.

allan said...

Lowell 3-run HR!

MFY: "Why can't we get players like that?"

nixon33 said...

And all that in between getting drunk, fucking everyone in sight, and getting into fights with everyone he didn't fuck?

awesome.

laura k said...

Take 3 of these and call me in the 7th.

very good :)

who is the Jordan of baseball then?

What would that mean?

allan said...

eject that kid!!!!

laura k said...

He did everything in a big way.

andy said...

I got tingly when you said that Laura.

Jordan created just about all of the good players of today. Basketball is a much different game now because of Jordan. Sure there were greats earlier. But nobody could be credited with changing the NBA like Jordan. Marketing and fans and style of play. These guys today grew up worshiping and copying and perfecting the Jordan game.

laura k said...

MFY: "Why can't we get players like that?"

:>)

Eject who, what kid?

allan said...

I'm thinking about Ruth and his HR explosion. It would be like Jordan averaging 175 points a game.

allan said...

awwww. be nice. give tek the dong.

andy said...

Jordan led his team to the most wins. he was unbeatable. with or without the flu.

nixon33 said...

tek with a......HIT!

laura k said...

Andy, then yes, Jordan is comparable to Ruth in that way.

Another hit for Tek! Holy shit, that's 2 today and 1 yesterday. Someone call Amy at the beach!

andy said...

Kay is a big ass moron. Wrong again on the home run

allan said...

nice tek! deep to right, then a lf slice.

andy said...

3rd is crispy. We may get a follow up appointment in the 6th.

nixon33 said...

i continue to hate lugo.

laura k said...

The biggest diff btn them would be that baseball was less developed when Ruth came in, so his influence has lasted... forever. I don't know if we can say that about Jordan?

I know how great he was, but I don't know basketball enough to judge his influence.

allan said...

I don't know enough about other sports to say much about Jordan or Gretzky.

All I know for sure is that Ruth remains #1.

andy said...

Gretzky in hockey?

Spencer Brown said...

Who was that guy who looked a lot like Jason Veritek who actually got two great swings, just missed a homer, and hit a solid line single?

Maybe his secret twin?

allan said...

#1 in baseball, I mean

laura k said...

I think Spencer Brown is right - it's not Tek at all. It's an imposter. Fakeitek? Faux-tek?

laura k said...

Everyone says Ruth, Jordan and Gretzky. I'd love to read something on it by someone who understood all three sports on a deep level. My knowledge of Jordan and Gretzky is too superficial to know if it's true.

allan said...

Assuming he's not dead, Varitek has to improve from his June. A player cannot hit much worse.

andy said...

Sports figures:
1 Ruth
2 Jordan
3 Gretzky
4 Joe Montana
5 Jeff Gordon
6 Secretariat
7 Jacoby Ellsbury
8 The future will decide.

laura k said...

And may I add Lou Gehrig is a hugely under-rated player? His accomplishments are insane. His career was always overshadowed by Ruth's, and now he's remembered for his disease and his speech. A damn shame.

allan said...

That list is bullshit.

No "Dave Roberts" on it.

laura k said...

"by way of the K" sighting

DRINK!

andy said...

Well just by the fact that people who know nothing about a sport know that those guys are the tops says what I am trying to say.

laura k said...

Nice to see the great horse on that list. Ellsbury, of course, he's more than proven himself already.

More Lugo hate for all.

allan said...

And may I add Lou Gehrig is a hugely under-rated player? His accomplishments are insane.

Yes, you may.

And yes, they are.

When talking about under-rated players (like Musial), Gehrig often gets forgotten.

He gets under-rated among the under-rated players!

andy said...

Allan you got me. Perhaps it's the midday cranberry vodka swimming in my veins.

andy said...

Add Dave to the 3rd hole.

nixon33 said...

come on lugo, get there.

laura k said...

Well just by the fact that people who know nothing about a sport know that those guys are the tops says what I am trying to say.

It only says they are the most famous and most talked about.

The ignorance of the masses proves nothing.

andy said...

Past lugo goes the ball. Wow. Lugo actually gets angry when he gets out still. I would think he would be happy that he is hitting at his average. Tek would love to hit at his average. Lugo don't be selfish.

laura k said...

I HAVE GOOD RESISTER NEWS!!

Josh Key just won in court appeal!! We have movement!

allan said...

Sidepoint: As 3-4 hitters, Tiz/MBM are nowhere near Ruth/Gehrig. No. Effing. Where.

I love them both, but facts is facts.

andy said...

and really with the defensive brilliance of lugo i think papi would be a better fit at SS. At least we would get good offense to go with the shitty fielding.

allan said...

Well just by the fact that people who know nothing about a sport know that those guys are the tops says what I am trying to say.

That's fame, though, not necessarily high talent.

laura k said...

mmm, vodka cranberry sound good...

andy said...

is there an explanation for this resister news on your blog laura?

allan said...

WOO-HOO, L!

Is this the refugee claim?

andy said...

L-Girl I will do the noble thing here and pour myself a Cran Vodka for you and then drink it myself.
Favorite Vodka?
mine is Skyy.

laura k said...

Andy, I just got an email about it this very moment, so it's not up yet. You can read all about the resisters there, tho - just not this development.

A, I think he won an appeal of his refugee claim. I don't know the implications yet. Everyone is very excited tho. I am waiting for more info.

laura k said...

Absolut.

Yes, do have one on my behalf!

allan said...

and really with the defensive brilliance of lugo i think papi would be a better fit at SS. At least we would get good offense to go with the shitty fielding.

it's unorthodox, but certainly worth a shot.

allan said...

WHERE IS RAS-NER?

IN THE SHOWER!

allan said...

L-Girl I will do the noble thing here and pour myself a Cran Vodka for you and then drink it myself.

What's that old joke?

"I'm going to help you build this house by eating this whole pie."

"That won't help."

"It couldn't hurt."

laura k said...

It's HUGE!!!!!!

Headline: BREAKING NEWS:
Federal Court rules that Immigration & Refugee Board must rehear case of war resister Joshua Key

YES!!! This must mean they will be allowed to re-present their cases with all the evidence this time! This will mean no one can be deported because they'll all be in process still.

OMG!!!!

Sorry for going all off-topic here, this is so exciting.

Did LBJ beat that out? No, I guess not.

andy said...

Can you imagine how papi would look out at short?

I also enjoy the absolut. It is better.

I have been to the Skyy distillery. And the blue flash is awesome when you are drunk. Seen the flash before?

laura k said...

Absolut is my fave when we're out. At home we have Smirnoff, which is good enough.

I also like orange Stoli for a martini.

allan said...

What? What?

Letting someone present evidence in his defense?

What a strange country.

nick said...

Wow! that is awesomeness, Laura! I look forward to reading more about this decision and what it all means.

laura k said...

I know not of this flash. Although I have seen many things while drunk, that is not one of them.

laura k said...

A, are you good to mod? I have to put this up right away.

allan said...

Yup. Go.

laura k said...

Thanks Nick!

Jeff House (lawyer for many of the resisters - a Vietnam resister himself) will be on CBC in a half hour.

allan said...

Nice outing for Rasner: 5-10-6-3-2, 103.

Last outing, he threw 102 pitches in 5 IP.

nick said...

I'm going to go take a shower and get ready to head up to the field of Pitts. Emma's going to want an ice cream (wah)conah.

Joe Grav said...

Blue flash? Are you sure you've only been drinking?

nick said...

not that I mean to share my personal bathing habits, more that I'm leaving the computer (nope, it ain't waterproof).

Enjoy part 2 of "A Sweep at the Toilet".

Joe Grav said...

Enjoy the game Nick.

andy said...

Because my satire goes over like a barrel over the falls i will say it straight out.

America is fucked with the impoverished pushed into military service because it is the only job they can get with just a HS diploma. Sure they will pay for college which is the big success push that this society puts on you. You do get college paid for after you go over and get blown up in a bullshit war. The people pushed into the military pre-911 were told that we haven't been in a war for a long time and probably won't be again because of the democrats. I was told this by a recruiter one time.they came after me not the other way around.

There is some fraud in the military recruiting process. So i agree that some of these soldiers who are not actively in the war zone should be able to go to canada. If you are in the zone then you cannot desert. stateside desert they can and will replace you with people from the ghetto.

Joe Grav said...

Hooray NECBL

Joe Grav said...

Andy: Yup.

It's really no surprise that job training funding has gone way down at the same time that the military recruiting budget has shot up. It's very sad.

Anyway, Go Sox.

andy said...

I love showing the flash to people.
A bottle of skyy is blue. when you pour it into a glass in a well lit room the light goes though the bottom of the bottle and is projected through the vodka pouring out of the bottle in an awesome blue light. It looks electric. If you can get sunlight to be your light source it is orgasmic.

Joe Grav said...

Keep it goin' Beckett. We could REALLY use 7...

And get off my lawn.

andy said...

did you have the foil top?

allan said...

Beckett at 102. A 7th inning seems unlikely.

Joe Grav said...

So... Aardsma?

Joe Grav said...

Dr. Dubbles

andy said...

Did I not say the Dr will see you again in the 7th?

Joe Grav said...

uh oh rain

allan said...

2 pitches - 2 hits!

Joe Grav said...

ococ og

laura k said...

Hi there, I'm back til 4:00. A, you can watch Jeff online if you want.

I see it's raining. Any chance they'll call it now?

laura k said...

Andy, well said. And don't forget: once you're in, they keep you in. Tens of thousands of US soldiers have been "stop-lossed". I.e. involuntary service, i.e. the draft.

laura k said...

If you want to know more about this, you can't do better than to read Josh Key's book "The Deserter's Tale" - an amazing book, a real page-turner. See your tax dollars at work.

laura k said...

If you can get sunlight to be your light source it is orgasmic.

I'll be right over.

laura k said...

run for cover, it's the 4th of july 7th inning stretch!!!

allan said...

jesus - stop sending runners with tek at the plate, for fuck's sake.

GK said...

Being a close follower of two sports that can be called distant cousins, baseball and cricket, I can tell you that Ruth standouts as unique in how he revolutionized the game.
Cricket had one too, , Don Bradman , an Aussie whose career was shortened by the WWII

allan said...

By the military's own estimate, 1 out of every 10 soldiers has been stop-lossed.

Volunteer Army? My fucking ass.

Jack Marshall said...

Hey, you can't blame Tito for trying his trademark "hit and run with a slow runner on first and a player who is striking out every other at bat" play! After all, it's worked out so well lately...

nick said...

I'm pretty sure I just saw ococ spit on the flag! or something.

I come back to see another crappy V-strike, out at second play. and then this.........

Anyhow. later.

andy said...

Exactly. I actually have the movie stop loss ready to watch today probably.

allan said...

Jeemer Time.

andy said...

jeemer looks solid now

laura k said...

CBC story on our breaking news

Non-breaking news: Tek GIDP

allan said...

Non-breaking news: Tek GIDP

KIDP, actually (with a backwards K).

andy said...

Also not breaking in the news dept is the lead off hit.

nixon33 said...

fuck, here we go.

allan said...

God, what's with all these faux epic shots of the toilet?

Who is YES's producer -- Leni Riefenstahl?

laura k said...

KIDP, actually (with a backwards K).

Oh right. I actually missed it.

Andy, the movie "In The Valley of Elah" is another really good one about the cost of this war. It's *very* heavy, though - approach with caution.

allan said...

Time for a CIDP.

andy said...

i love our bullpen.

allan said...

WTF -- call a strike!

allan said...

WTF WTF WTF

is there a strike zone at all for jeter?

Jack Marshall said...

WHO DO YOU TRUST?????

allan said...

Delivery for HP Ump Paul Schrieber:

A bowl of dicks.

allan said...

such bullshit pitch calling.

andy said...

Don't get me wrong completely though. I think war can be a good thing for the winner if you go in there to win. If you go in there to use the military like a political nation building force you are asking for failure. We don't like military leaders making decisions over here how can we really like the decisions they will make over there?
Dear, Military go over there and blow the fuck out of them then come home and let the politics take over.

andy said...

yankees deserve to win. this ump is doing a good job in keeping with that.

allan said...

Yankees always win. It's a law of the universe, like gravity.

Jack Marshall said...

And here is where I wopuld say, bring in your best---not Delcarman---Pap. This is the ballgame. If you don't get through this, there IS no save.

allan said...

Well, Jeemer got 3 outs.

Too bad the ump has his head up his CI's ass and refused to call strikes 3 and 4.

allan said...

It is not a Pap crisis, because even if the Yanks get 2 runs (or 3), the Sox bat two more times.

If it was 4-3, then I'd agree. But as enlightened as Tito can be at times, bringing in his closer in the 7th is likely too far out of the box.

andy said...

come on call the game. too much rain.

andy said...

not fair to the pitchers

Jack Marshall said...

On the other hand, Manny's fine...

nixon33 said...

YEAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

allan said...

MDC > SMcBL

andy said...

ok let the game continue this rain is good for the batters

charlie pioli said...

I can't believe that stupid ESPN nor Fox is broadcasting the game in Portland today. Instead they would show something like Poker or Nascar!

I'm stuck with gameday.

Benjamin said...

Is it even raining in the Bronx? It isn't raining here in Manhattan.

allan said...

it's pouring,. little puddles behind slappy at third.

Amy said...

Hi, all. Happy 4th. And happy day as the Sox are leading! Rain in the Bronx. Just clouds and sun here in Wellfleet.

But had to come in to see the end of the game.

nixon33 said...

foghorn leghorn into pitch.

i forgot to tell you cats that along with my tix from fan they sent two passes to fanfest at the javitz center during all star week.
pretty cool i guess.

allan said...

Amy: You must see highlights of Yook's triple in the 3rd. High comedy featuring Damon!!

laura k said...

Hey all, I'm back. I see we're running down the clock on another win!

Hi Amy! We had a big breakthrough in the resisters story!

allan said...

E-ROD!

laura k said...

uh oh rain dee-lay

andy said...

How can they keep the game gong with all those puddles?

Benjamin said...

So that's what happens when an unstoppable suck meets an immovable suck?

allan said...

MEGA TARP!

nixon33 said...

lemme guess what yankees classic yes is going to show during the rain delay, lets see, something to do with the yankees beating the sox?

Amy said...

What's the news, Laura?

And I guess I will have to wait for the post game show to see the Youk/Damon highlight. I did see that Damon was out---injured?

(Harv out on porch while Maddy and I watch on NESN.)

andy said...

Why was the grounds crew not ready on the tarp? they let this go on too long. somehow that favors the yankees.

andy said...

Is the Al Gore Warming?

allan said...

Maybe they can play the Boone game on the video screen to fire the fans up. Or show a Mr. Hankee lecture.

Either way, keep the fans there buying food and drink for 2-3 hours, then call it.

laura k said...

Amy, Josh Key won an appeal. A Federal Court is making the Refugee Board re-hear his case. It's HUGE. We are all freaking out.

laura k said...

I imagine folks with YES will be seeing Boone before too long. Yawn.

laura k said...

I don't get the Al Gore joke. Please explain for me and other dummies.

allan said...

That's the Yankees for you. Living in the past.

allan said...

Does he mean Bot (robot)?

Benjamin said...

amy: you can see the clip on GDGD. Just click on the video tab, and it's the fourth one.

Amy said...

OK, I back tracked through the thread and see the news---sounds great, Laura. I will have to read the details on wmtc about the case since I don't know anything aout it. But if the court is giving a rehearing, that sure sounds like great news!

allan said...

Just watched it again myself!!!

LBJ's catch (#5) is also worth seeing 5-6 more times.

Amy said...

Thanks, Phil, for the link! I loved the way the ball was resting on the wall!

Amy said...

Allan, why Oscar the Grouch?

OK, I am going to get clean (of sand and sunscreen), while the rain delay is going on.

Be back soon.

allan said...

Because I am a grouch.

(It's an old one I am reviving.)

andy said...

Rain on july 4th, is it global waming?

allan said...

Also because "I Love Trash":

Oh, I love trash!
Anything dirty or dingy or dusty
Anything ragged or rotten or rusty
Yes, I love trash

I have here a sneaker that's tattered and worn
It's all full of holes and the laces are torn
A gift from my mother the day I was born
I love it because it's trash

Oh, I love trash!
Anything dirty or dingy or dusty
Anything ragged or rotten or rusty
Yes, I love trash

I have here some newspaper thirteen months old
I wrapped fish inside it; it's smelly and cold
But I wouldn't trade it for a big pot o' gold!
I love it because it's trash

Oh, I love trash!
Anything dirty or dingy or dusty
Anything ragged or rotten or rusty
Yes, I love trash

I've a clock that won't work
And an old telephone
A broken umbrella, a rusty trombone
And I am delighted to call them my own!
I love them because they're trash

Oh, I love trash!
Anything dirty or dingy or dusty
Anything ragged or rotten or rusty
Yes, I love, I love, I love trash!

allan said...

Rain on july 4th, is it global waming?

No, America hates the Yankees.

andy said...

No somehow the rain showed up after the yankees blew the bases loaded situation. If they scored then the sox would have lost because they for sure would have called the game.

Mike said...

Oscar the Grouch is great, but perhaps Ernie is more appropriate today... http://youtube.com/watch?v=NkLs2FevZvY

Amy said...

You a grouch when the Sox are beating the Yankees?? I doubt that. But Oscar was always my favorite Sesame St character. He was the only one who wasn't so sickeningly sweet.

Still in a rain delay....

allan said...

You a grouch when the Sox are beating the Yankees??

No. But in general, I am a tad cranky.

Benjamin said...

Someone on SoSH says the tarp is coming off. Anyone confirm?

laura k said...

Allan, grouchy? Huh. Never noticed.

I was off talking to my mom. I can't believe Rogers kept NESN on this whole time!

I saw Jeff House on CBC Newsworld, a great story, very positive. I feel like the tide is turning, we are going to win the day.

Benjamin said...

Amalie Benjamin:
It seems to have stopped raining here in the Bronx, and the grounds crew is taking the tarp off the field at the moment. I think we're all hopeful that the rain will hold off long enough to get the final two innings of this game in.

The crowd is certainly sparse at this time, with an hour rain delay inserted into an already-lengthy game.
