Dave Roberts Being Treated For Hodgkin's Lymphoma

Dave Roberts was diagnosed with the Hodgkin's lymphoma in March and has since had two rounds of chemotherapy. "Fortunately, the prognosis is very positive. We got it at an early stage."

Terry Francona:
I expect Davey can outrun anything. He's got a lot of people here pulling for him. I think he probably feels that everywhere. Everywhere he's been, I would think he's got people pulling for him.
Nice ring!
Example
The player with the largest WPA* last night?

*: Win Probability Added is the difference in Win Expectancy -- the percent chance a particular team will win based on the score, inning, outs, runners on base, and the run environment -- between the start of the play and the end of the play. That difference is then credited/debited to the batter and the pitcher.

Bill Hall. His two-run homer in the second inning increased the Red Sox chances of winning 15.8%.

Over the last nine games, Victor Martinez and Jason Varitek have thrown out 6 of 7 attempted base stealers (after catching only 2 of 29 in the first 17 games of the season).

The Yankees will not have Javy Vazquez (9.78 ERA; 32 hits and 15 walks in 23 innings) pitch BP at Fenway this weekend. The expected match-ups: Beckett/Hughes, Buchholz/Sabathia, Lester/Burnett.

All the best to Dave Roberts.

I guess I will be seeing the Sabathia/HH match up on Saturday. I hope HH continues to be as effective as he has been. I do not want to see the Sox get killed while I am sitting with Yankee fans...

I know someone who had Hodgkin's Lymphoma. Thankfully Hodgkin's lymphoma is generally treatable (to the point where doctors tend to dial down the chemo relative to other cancers, because the risk of getting leukemia from the chemo can outweigh the risk from the lymphoma itself).

Unlike non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, which can be anything.

Not that long ago, Hodgkin's had a much worse prognosis than non-Hogkin's lymphoma. I had a close friend who had the non-H type, and everyone told me she was so lucky it wasn't Hodgkin's.

But I gather that in the last 10-15 years there have been huge advances in Hodgkin's treatments and the survival rate has gone way up.

I know we all wish Roberts the best, a recovery as spectacular as The Steal.
