G109: Angels 9, Red Sox 2

Angels - 000 305 001 - 9 16 0
Red Sox - 000 020 000 - 2 8 4
A horrific sixth inning -- walk, home run, single, groundout, double, error, single, stolen base, error, sac fly, error, double, groundout -- put this one out of reach. Low point of the season so far.

Tampa Bay edged Toronto 3-2, so the Red Sox fell to 3 GB. The Yankees whipped Baltimore 13-3 to stay 4 GB.

And the trade rumours continue to swirl around Manny Ramirez.

***

Joe Saunders (3.10, 135 ERA+) / Josh Beckett (3.83, 115 ERA+)

The Red Sox try to avoid being swept by the Angels for the second three-game series in 13 days.

But first: Rays/Blue Jays at 12:30 PM and Orioles/Yankees at 1 PM

I still believe it isn't, but this is as close as we've gotten to losing Manny since the A-Rod deal fell through, and this time there's no MLBPA-type hangup.

Fuck, fuck, fuckity fuck fuck.

Okay, in lieu of posting "fuck" when something bad happens in this game - and it's starting to look like it might happen a lot - I will simply post this link:

Stark, 8:23: "Officials from teams around the sport are beginning to hear details about the structure of the Manny Ramirez deal. According to one of them, the three players the Red Sox are seeking from the Marlins for Ramirez are Jeremy Hermida, pitcher Ryan Tucker and big-time outfield prospect Mike Stanton. However, the two sides also have discussed substituting Josh Willingham for Hermida."

Tony said...

Does the current feeling with Manny tonight and possible imminent trades feel similar as 2004?

One can only hope. The difference is that Nomar's value in '04 was a lot less than Manny's is right now. I might not be remembering right, though.

Rob said...

rotoworld.com rates Ryan Tucker and Mike Stanton as two of the Marlins' top 5 prospects.

Zenslinger said...

I love that stat they just put up - not only does it show how awesome Tizzle has been, but it lets the mooks know how fucking awesome Adam Dunn is.

I didn't catch it -- but was it about walks or OBP? I was surprised to see today that Dunn has walked among the most in the last five years. His batting avg is somewhat low, but he makes up for it. 'Bout a .360 OBP usually. That takes a lot of the sting out of his high K's.

Rob said...

Hermida, by the way, is batting second for the Marlins, behind Hanley Ramirez. Willingham, on the other hand, is batting cleanup.

Bay is batting cleanup currently for Pittsburgh. As much as any of that matters.

Zenslinger said...

rotoworld.com rates Ryan Tucker and Mike Stanton as two of the Marlins' top 5 prospects.

Yeah, but would we keep them or would they go to Pittsburgh?

Tony said...

Gah, a 4 pitch walk. To Hunter. Gah.

The Dunn stat they put up (I'm watching FSN West) was that since 2004, Adam Dunn has hit 196 dingers, tied for most in that span with A-Rod. Tizzle is 3rd with 191.

Rob said...

That's one of the things I wouldn't like about this deal very much, would be if Hermida is batting second for Florida, how could he bat fourth for Boston?

So, that leads me to another thought that if the deal is made, the Red Sox very well could flip Hermida to Pittsburgh for Bay.

Rob said...

Rosenthal says there is "no way", according to a Marlins official, that Stanton would be included in the talks.

The Red Sox and Marlins are talking, major-league sources confirmed, but there was "nothing close," as of 8:40 p.m. ET Wednesday, according to an official with knowledge of the discussions.

Reports surfaced earlier Wednesday night saying that one of the prospects in a Ramirez trade could be highly regarded outfielder Mike Stanton, the team's second-round pick last season.

"No way," one Marlins official said.

"I don't see a scenario where Mike Stanton would be traded for anyone," another team official added.

It would probably fuck with peoples' heads to see these guys string together more than 2 hits.

You just cannot say you're better than a team if you are 1-8 against them in the season series. That season series will come to an end tonight, and that's what the record will be if the Red Sox do lose.

The Angels definitely seem to have our number right now. But I also believe that we are a better team than our play of late has shown us to be. So in that regard, we could still be the better team, they've just caught us at a bad time.

Clark Spencer of the Miami Herald thinks UFO's have been seen over Dolphin Stadium.

UFO's Sighted Over Dolphin Stadium -- Manny Ramirez to Marlins?

Beam me up, Scotty.

SI.com is reporting aliens have descended on Dolphin Stadium and dropped off the reincarnated figure of Babe Ruth. Just kidding. Actually, what is being reported is that the Marlins are "engaged" in discussions with the Red Sox for Manny Ramirez, which is just about as laughable as some supermarket tabloid story.

Amy said...

Oh, fuck, I hate coming home to an 8-2 score in the 8th. This is so discouraging. And they think trading Manny will improve things.

At least I went to something worthwhile tonight---an ACLU event with lots of authors reading works of those who had been excluded from the US over the last 100 years. Depressing in its own way, but differently.

The Pudge trade is still sticking in my craw, too. Fucking Kyle Farnsworth? Really?

Dave Dombrowski...super genius. You'd think the Yankees, who desperately don't want Jose Molina as their starting C, could be leaned on for a little more than that.

Christ, I'm annoyed today.

Rob said...

Jacobs being lifted from the Marlins game isn't a time he'd normally be lifted, and there has been talk of a Jacobs for Bengie Molina trade.

Amy said...

Yeah, just where did the Pudge trade come from? And what is this about Manny and the Marlins?

SoSock said...

Hey, nice start Lopez, 2 straight hits. Now all we need is a Timlin sighting

Latest at 8:29: Here's the latest. MLB.com says we're moving closer to the three-team deal. The Pirates could receive a minor leaguer from the Red Sox. Dejan Kovacevic says the Pirates would receive four or more prospects for Bay, as well as Hermida. John Grabow could end up in Boston or Florida. Perrotto says it could be expanded to have Jed Lowrie go to Pittsburgh and Jack Wilson to Boston. The Bucs also like Red Sox prospect Hunter Jones.

laura k said...

Phil, give me the pun again so I can laugh at it.

mlb.com blog

There were a smattering of sources in that post, including a couple of Pittsburgh beat writers.

amy, the Sox are planning to trade Manny to the Fish for prospects, Jason Bay will go to Boston, either Hermida or Willingham will go to Pittsburgh. Or something like that. Me, I'd like the trade a lot more if BOTH Bay and Hermida/Willingham were coming to Boston.

Rob said...

No mention of Jason Bay in that update from MLBTR.

Tony said...

Just saw a rah-rah "hey, immigrants, get a fucking green card" commercial for John McCain. My mood darkened just a little bit more.

Feels like Masterson's getting Proctored.

Tony said...

ish, I think that MLBTR post made it an assumption that Bay's going to Boston. Otherwise the 3-way deal would make absolutely no sense.

Amy said...

Yeah, it was a great event. Lots of local but well-known authors: Alice Hoffman, Howard Zinn, James Carroll,Tony Kahn, among the best known, plus others, reading from writings of Emma Goldman, Nelson Mandela, Gordon Kahn, Pablo Nerudo, Doris Lessing, and others. A very touching reading from a detainee at Guantanamo.

I was hoping for a baseball win to break the hopeless mood.

Rob said...

Bay still included in the talks.

laura k said...

Tomy, why are you posting URLs to YouTubes of The Wire?

Howard Zinn was there? That's so great. He hasn't been doing anything because his wife was very ill - and then died. I'm so glad to hear he was there.

He is my hero.

Tony said...

l-girl, it's the "fuck fuckity fuck" scene, aka my favorite one. I posted it in lieu of a massive profanity-laced post when the Sox did something awful.

As you can see, I had to post it a lot.

Amy said...

So what do we really gain from this deal for this season? Are we giving up chances of the post-season? Or is the FO just cocky enough to think we can get there without Manny?

laura k said...

Guess you're ohm alone!!!!!

That is priceless.

Guess he's, um, home alone.

Amy said...

Howard Zinn was amazing. He read from a speech by Carlos Fuentes about being refused entry to the US many times and then the time he was allowed to come only to Manhattan and sneaked with Norman Mailer into Brooklyn. It was both funny and moving, and Zinn read it with real feeling.

Sarah Haendler said...

HERE we go... time for that Manhattan sized Twinkie...

Tony said...

The hope, I'd assume, is that Bay can replicate at least some of Manny's numbers while playing better defense, and that might be enough to keep Boston in the race. If it was straight prospects, that'd be a "punt 2008" deal. Even though they're playing so badly right now, I don't think there's a reason for them to punt 2008.

SoSock said...

Me, too---very upset if Manny is traded. I see nothing good in it. And who is this Bay guy? I know little about the stupid Senior Circuit, but I am sure he is no Manny Ramirez.

Sarah Haendler said...

Haha - missed your ohm earlier Phil. I'm glad we got a recap on that. (I went looking when you mentioned it, but didn't go all the way back to the other page.)

laura k said...

Tony, you're a little ahead of yourself there.

Tony said...

l-girl, I'll be upset too ,and I won't like it one bit from a baseball standpoint, but I'll understand.

Now that it seems entirely likely Manny won't come back for '09, a deal has to be done. Boston cannot risk just outright losing Manny, not with the weak FA market for the 08 offseason.

laura k said...

Jason Bay. Canadian. Good player. Not Manny.

Tony said...

And I know I'm ahead of myself, but I'm trying to think of justifications for the deal outside of "Manny said mean things and fans are booing him now".

Amy said...

Phil, good OHM joke. Consistent with your techie side.

How was the bar exam today? Probably better than this game.

laura k said...

Tony, I'm not discussing it. I mean no offense to you, and nothing personal, but I don't care what you or anyone else understands about this. I want him to be on our team, our team is better with him than without him, and nothing else matters to me.

Rob said...

Pirates are still talking to Tampa about Bay as well.

Tony said...

l-girl, I understand completely. Believe me, I don't want to discuss it. But the issue is right in front of our face, and if I don't try to rationalize it, I'll probably break something.

Amy said...

Most of my students dread the MBE more than the state days, but most also are not great at standardized tests. I hate standardized tests on principle. Almost as much as I am hating the Angels and the thought of losing Manny.

laura k said...

Nice to be so relaxed about a bar exam! Good on you. Good luck, too.

With a multiple choice test, the answer's sitting on the page. With an essay test, you've got to come up with the answer yourself.

OK, let's just see how demoralized the team and its fans can be.

Somewhere in the Boston/Providence area.

True about multiple choice---but many people find the format of multiple choice confusing in and of itself, regardless of content. If you know the material, an essay question will let you show what you know. A multiple choice answer that's right can be a good guess; a wrong answer can mean someone just was confused by the format.

Rob said...

At this point, it appears there's been an agreement on a deal, cash will change hands of more than a million, obviously, and right now they're trying to agree on prospects. And I guess Manny still has to waive his no-trade clause.

laura k said...

If Manny is traded, I will lose a lot of heart for the rest of the season. Not that I won't climb back on board at some point, but I won't care as much about watching every game.

This whole campaign against Manny is so sickening - more so because it's TOTALLY unnecessary. It makes me really bitter against Red Sox management and increases my usual loathing of the mainstream sports media.

Amy said...

Good luck with the move. Any particular type of practice you looking into?

SoSock said...

You know, we could have Josh Hamilton's 70 yr-old Amer. Legion coach come out and throw BP, since that's all we seem to be doing. It would cost less.

laura k said...

ha, funny torii hunter quote. especially since he's on my girls team.

Amy said...

SoSock, we could have one of your Little Leaguers at this point.

Tony said...

Manny has probably already waived his no-trade clause, since this deal is actually moving. What with the deadline and all.

Man. This is fucking weird. I more or less became a huge Sox fan in the Pedro/Manny era. Now it looks like both are gone.

Rob said...

Rockies/Pirates game has ended.

Sarah Haendler said...

If Manny is traded, I'm going to cry.

Amy said...

The campaign against Manny is so obviously created by the media. Listening to the radio before Saturday's game started made that so apparent. Callers kept calling to ask about other things, and the radio asshole kept steering it back to Manny bad-mouthing.

Rob said...

Marlins game has ended now as well.

Benjamin said...

Anderson's out of the game. Maybe he's getting traded to Boston for Timlin.

Sarah Haendler said...

Yet another reason to hate the MSM. There are so many.

Amy said...

A hit for Tek! OK, that at least makes me smile a little.

laura k said...

Amy, I agree, but to me it also seems created by Red Sox FO, using the media as their mouthpiece. Leaking bits here and there, then hiding behind no comments.

Tony said...

All these years I'd known, deep in my heart, that the New York baseball media was the worst of them all. If Manny is traded, that little piece of my heart will shrivel up and die.

Rob said...

Gammons, 9:58

The Manny Ramirez trade conversations are expected to continue into Thursday, according to a source. Because it's a very complicated deal, involving a player who has the right to veto the trade and other parts, it is still unlikely to happen. But the negotiations will go on.
