G109: Angels 9, Red Sox 2

Angels - 000 305 001 - 9 16 0
Red Sox - 000 020 000 - 2 8 4
A horrific sixth inning -- walk, home run, single, groundout, double, error, single, stolen base, error, sac fly, error, double, groundout -- put this one out of reach. Low point of the season so far.

Tampa Bay edged Toronto 3-2, so the Red Sox fell to 3 GB. The Yankees whipped Baltimore 13-3 to stay 4 GB.

And the trade rumours continue to swirl around Manny Ramirez.

***

Joe Saunders (3.10, 135 ERA+) / Josh Beckett (3.83, 115 ERA+)

The Red Sox try to avoid being swept by the Angels for the second three-game series in 13 days.

But first: Rays/Blue Jays at 12:30 PM and Orioles/Yankees at 1 PM

What if we score 8 runs this inning?

I think the Boston baseball media is much worse than the NY baseball media. NY writers are more likely to kiss up and cover up for the players. Boston writers just hate the team and the fans. They are so venomous. No comparison in my opinion.

Hmm, 201 last night and 401 tonight. That hasn't meant anything good for the team....

WHAT THE FUCK RED SOX MANAGEMENT?
AND FUCK YOU TOO ROBOT RED SOX FANS. YOU PUSSIES THE LOT OF YOU!
YOU MOTHERFUCKERS!
I HOPE THIS ISNT TRUE.

Vomiting seems reasonable to me.

Perhaps all three of us will do both. Anyone a sympathy vomiter?

Amy said...

OK, no 8 runs. We are swept. And that isn't even the thing making me most sad.

Benjamin said...

Bleh.

Tony said...

I think we can now safely say that LAA is the team to beat. Those assholes.

Benjamin said...

The NY media own the Boston media, anyway.

Amy said...

I won't vomit or cry, but I will be so pissing mad and upset that if Harvey dares mention Pudge Rodriguez, I might get violent.

Rob said...

I would stress this deal isn't done yet, and it could fall apart if the three teams can't agree on prospects. Unfortunately it sounds like they've agreed on the big players.

laura k said...

Doesn't matter who owns them when it comes to this.

TOTALLY!
ever since i moved to ny, i am almost "appreciative" of the sports media. i mean there are dicks everywhere, but yeah, wfan, and espn radio, and the beat writers seem to be on a higher level than the boston media. i will miss it whenever i eventually move.

I won't see you guys tomorrow... unless something very big happens, or doesn't happen.

So I guess I'll see you. :)

Bye.

Tony said...

I don't want the Manny negotiations to continue to tomorrow. That'd just be another day on pins and needles, waiting for the hammer to drop. Either get it done tonight or let it drop. Waiting any longer might actually break my brain.

Amy said...

Good thing we always beat these Angels in the post-season.

SoSock said...

Mercifully, the game has ended. The BS will continue for hours.
I'll be glad when it's behind us and we can start playing serious ball again. I just hope we are playing with Manny in LF

Sarah Haendler said...

Manny being, you know, Manny, aside, I don't like the way this deal is shaping up at all. I don't like it even for someone I don't love like Manny.

Benjamin said...

Puke.

laura k said...

Amy, Pudge isn't going to change that team very much. It's a raw deal how the Yankees got him for nothing, but it's not going to make a big difference in the standings. Think of him in place of Posada, who would have been there pre-injury. No big deal.

laura k said...

All we know is that they're talking. That's all that's happening so far. The rest is all speculation. In that last Gammons post, he admits it's unlikely to happen.

I'm gonna go with that until I hear otherwise.

laura k said...

Well, good night.

Amy said...

I know, Laura---it's more the principle of the thing---that we give up a great player and get little, and the Yankees give up nothing and get a good player.

Sarah Haendler said...

Stupid Yankees. Stupid Pudge. Stupid Boston Media. Stupid... Stupid!

Manny gets dealt , so be it...I think I would have a lot more problems with them trading him if :

1. Players came out and send we love Manny he is a great teammate

2. He didn't bring up the fact he would accept any trade.

3. We didn't just lose 5 of 6

4. The fact that was the ugliest lost I have seen in quite a while (in my opinion it is no affecting the whole team.)

Manny has made himself worth less than Kyle Farnsworth....He did that to fuck with the FO....And as a fan of the Boston Red Sox , that does not sit to well with me..Nomar had more value when we traded him....

Manny left the ballpark before the clubhouse opened after the game, according to NESN.

I must say, the degree to which so many here simply discount Ramirez's obvious culpability in all this is beyond amazing.

The man is, sorry, obviously an ass-hole. He has also obviously convinced a group of professionals who care about the team and have reasonable levels of experience and intelligence that he cannot be trusted not to sabotage the team's chances of winning. Some here act as if the owners and front office are trying to wreck the team's chances of winning. Absurd. They didn't tell team mates that Manny might not play the whole home stand in some kind of protest, Manny did. They didn't establish a career-long rep as a loose cannon, Manny did. They didn't repeatedly ask to be traded and renege over the years, beg out of games, etc, etc. That was all Manny. Sure, the media over-played it, were unfair, exaggerated...just like they do with Britney Spears, Lindsay Lohan, Michael Jackson and other celebtities who can't stay out of trouble...but you can't argue that they were picked for the treatment by random. They don't have the sense, intelligence, responsibility or maturity to stay out of trouble. Neither does Manny. Can you deny it?

He has disrupted the team at a crucial juncture by begging off, sounding off, and feeding a media frenzy. Ultimately he's responsible for this mess, not the meida. I don't want to lose him in the batting order, but if we do, he's responsible. Blame Manny. he behaved like a selfish jerk, almost certainly because he IS a selfish jerk, and didn't care how it affected the team.

And he'll be just as miserable in Miami as he is here.

laura k said...

Can you deny it?

Can and do.

Jack being Jack.

laura k said...

They didn't establish a career-long rep as a loose cannon

Yes, they did. As has been well documented again and again and again and again and again on this blog.

Phil, C'mon. This has a lot more to do with than just numbers.

I know it is hard to fathom, but it is true....

laura k said...

Manny has made himself worth less than Kyle Farnsworth....

You really believe that? Or you're saying that in anger?

The numbers Phil quoted represent something important. It's not "about numbers" or not about numbers. The numbers are what Manny does. Do you not understand that?

People who are so eager to dump Manny make me want the team to completely tank without him.

Not really, of course. But it pisses me off so much, it's what I find myself thinking.

nixon33 said...

to quote billy martin "i'd play hitler and mussolini if it helped me win the pennant".

3. We didn't just lose 5 of 6

What does that have to do with wanting to trade Manny?

laura k said...

to quote billy martin "i'd play hitler and mussolini if it helped me win the pennant".

Right. Winning's not enough, though. We have to approve of every player's every action. The amazing part is that fans really believe they know every players every thought and action, rather than just what the media lets and wants them to know.

And they have the fucking nerve to get all self-righteous about it, the fucking sheep.

Now Jayson Stark's saying the Rays are "talking" with Cincy about Adam Dunn. I really wonder what they'd give up for him, but if they do get him, dear God.

L, Manny has to receive some blame in all of this, has to.....Redsock has brought up time and time again since this whole mess started..What started it all? Why the unhappiness? Why the trade me talk .. Its not about winning , because we were and a game out of first place...Why did he start this now..The media? The FO? Was he mad that they fined him for pushing a ticket manager? Is he mad they sent him for an MRI on his hurting knees, then he went and had 5rbi's in 5 games...I don't give a fuck that people think the media turned him to a jerk.....Just go play for the contract you signed and let everything else work it self out.
I have to have some faith in the FO that they know Manny better than me , and they know what they deal with , it's not like getting rid of Manny now helps them at all, how could it....

laura k said...

Redsock has brought up time and time again since this whole mess started

That doesn't mean I agreed.

it's not like getting rid of Manny now helps them at all

Exactly. That's my point. So don't do it.

I don't want "faith" in the FO unless they're 100%, completely focused on winning, and only winning.

Gammo:

"As midnight approached Wednesday night on the East Coast, officials from the Marlins and Red Sox said a deal involving Manny Ramirez was not done. Indications from Pittsburgh were that the Pirates were not satisfied with the players they were receiving in exchange for sending Jason Bay to Boston. And in California, Ramirez's agent, Scott Boras, said he had been told nothing, which means nothing has been completed in terms of Ramirez's waiving his no-trade rights or in completing paperwork to send to the commissioner's office.

So, the complicated three-way deal might go down close to Thursday's 4 p.m. ET deadline. Ramirez wants out, and is willing to go to Florida. The Marlins want him -- and what he means to their pennant chances and pursuit of a new ballpark. The Red Sox clearly are willing to finance Ramirez's exit.

But the value of the young players was a sticking point late into the night, and one Red Sox official said, "This is anything but done."

The Nomar Garciaparra deal in 2004 went down to minutes before the deadline, and there was so much confusion the Twins never received the second prospect they thought they were owed. This might be Nomar Redux."

Ugh. A whole day of Manny Watch. Tomorrow is going to be one nutty f'ing day.

I say everything in anger....:)

I just can't understand what could be so bad about playing for the Boston Red Sox...
He doesn't want to be here, he has made that abundantly clear..
Why should try to place blame on others, what do we have to do to make him happy..I'll do it tommorrow if there is a answer......

I don't think they trust him enough not to tank it all season.....and who wants to hear after every ground ball, every day off, and every miscue in lf, Is Manny tanking it? Is he sabotageing the Red Sox?
That would most likely come from the media , I understand that , but it would make me watch differently...

ESPN, might as well let Al Roker work the trade deadline show....These guys haven't predicted a trade yet.....They were blindsided on the Angel trade, and the 2 yankee trades...

Jack Marshall said...

Laura, your position on Manny no longer has any relationship to reality. The media established Manny as a loose cannon? That vicious CLEVELAND media? The media cut off a Damon throw to the plate fron 15 feet away because Manny wasn't paying attention? The media had dinner withe Luis Soho after Manny had called in sick? And so on, and so on? So the media just happened to pick Manny, and just as easily could have made, say, John Valentin look like a whacko? Are you kidding?

This isn't "Jack being Jack," (Shoot the messenger!) this is Laura being stubborn. There isn't any conspiracy against Manny. He's giving the media a loaded gun and they're pulling the trigger.

And getting rid of Manny now OBVIOUSLY helps the team, because (I say again) THEY CAN'T TRUST HIM. The team obviously believes that he quit on it in 2006, and faked an injury this week. They believe that he is a real risk to tank the rest of the year, and that the difference between a trying Manny and, say, a Jason Bay for 2 months isn't such a fall-off on the worst case that it outweighs the difference between a hustling Jason Bay and a sulking Manny for two months, which is what they are afraid is the real trade. The Sox would not trade Manny if they didn't feel the team, all things considered, has a better chance without him than with him.

Not everything is a conspiracy by those in power to crush the human spirit. In this case, a guy being paid about 7 million dollars for his services over the the next three months (some victim!)has made perfectly rational people with a job to do believe that he is capable of not doing his best out of spite, selfishness, and deficient logic. That is a plenty good reason to get rid of anyone, from Babe Ruth on down.

And to Hell with Manny for putting the team in this dilemma.
