G91: Yankees 5, Red Sox 4 (10)

Red Sox - 000 030 100 0 - 4 7 1
Yankees - 010 001 200 1 - 5 8 1
This contest evolved from a game I thought the Red Sox had pretty well in hand to a toss-up to a loss. Boston is now 5 GB the white-hot Rays.

Wakefield was fantastic (again!) for 5.1 innings, allowing only two baserunners to the first 18 New York hitters: Kabbalah McBluelips's home run leading off the second and a walk to Giambi to begin the fifth.

Boston struck for three runs off Joba in the top of the fifth: Youkilis and Casey singled and Crisp walked. Ball four to Ococ was a wild pitch that scored Yook (who slid into JtC's right leg and then had a pitch thrown behind his ass his next time up). After Lugo and Cash struck out, Ellsbury walked and Pedroia singled in two more runs. 3-1 Sox.

With one out in the sixth, Wakefield allowed a single to Gardner, who stole second and scored on Jeter's RBI single. CI took second on an errant pick-off throw, but was doubled off when Lugo leapt skyward to haul in Abreu's line drive.

Lugo again got the best of Jetes a few minutes later when, in the top of the seventh, he got credit for an infield single up the middle and took second on an error by the Yankee captain, who (uncharacteristically) ranged far to his left to snare the grounder. Cash followed with a line drive double into the left field corner and Boston led 4-2.

A-Rod singled to open the seventh against Wakefield and after Timmeh retired HGH on a flyball, Tito went wisely to the pen. But Lopez was not sharp. After Posada singled, Cano tripled in both runners to tie the game. After a fielder's choice nailed Cano at the plate, Delcarmen came in to fan Molina.

In the top of the ninth, facing Rivera, Casey singled and went to second on Crisp's bunt. Varitek was sent up to hit for Lugo (why?) and he shattered his bat on the first pitch, tapping weakly back to the mound. Casey went to third, but he died there as Manny, hitting for Cash, stood stock still and looked at three straight strikes to end the inning.

MDC pitched a perfect eighth, Okajima matched him in the ninth, and Papelbon came on for the 10th. Cano grounded an 0-2 pitch into center field for a leadoff single. Milk Dud bunted him to second and Bot blew Betemit away with pure heat. Gardner fell behind 0-2 but fouled off two pitches, took two balls, then fouled off another heater. On the 8th pitch of the at-bat, he grounded a ball up the middle. Cora dove to his left, deflecting the ball into short center, but neither Pedroia nor Crisp could make a play as Cano scored the winning run.

Tampa topped the Royals 9-2 and lead the East (and Red Sox) by a whopping five games. New York remains 9 GB.

***

Tim Wakefield (3.72, 115 ERA+) / Joba Chamberlain (2.22, 182 ERA+)

Wakefield has pitched at least seven innings in each of his last seven starts (dating back to May 28). He has allowed a grand total of 11 runs (1.98 ERA).

***

David Ortiz may take BP on Monday and "might be able to begin a rehab stint in the minors after the All-Star break". ... Bartolo Colon long-tossed from 120 feet and may throw off a mound this week.

Dustin Pedroia extended his hitting streak to 13 games (with nine multi-hit games (log)). Tony Massarotti, Herald:
The author of a 13-game hitting streak, Pedroia has raised his average from .260 to .313. During that stretch, in 57 at-bats, Pedroia had an absurd 30 hits, a batting average of .526.

That isn't a streak. It's an avalanche. ...

Since May 1, 2007, among major leaguers with at least 700 plate appearances, Pedroia's .324 average ranks behind only Magglio Ordonez, Ichiro Suzuki and Placido Polanco in the AL.
Gordon Edes reports that Javier Lopez
has allowed just one earned run in his last 15 outings (15.2 innings). You can go back even further - in his last 28 appearances, he has allowed just three earned runs in 25 innings, an ERA of 1.08. His ERA of 2.10 ranks in the top five among AL relievers with 30 innings or more.

Lopez still has too many walks - 14 in 34.1 innings - but many of those came early. He's walked just three in his last 11 appearances.
Joe McDonald, Journal:
On this current three-city road trip, the Red Sox have produced 13 bases-loaded situations. However, Boston is 1-for-11 with only three runs scored, including a sacrifice fly. In fact, the Sox are 0-for-their-last-9 with the bases juiced.

Overall, they are 1-for-19 with one walk, four sacrifice flies, and eight strikeouts and have grounded into two double plays in their last 24 bases-loaded situations.
Also: Doing the Red Sox's laundry.

Never forget -- I love you all!

Alex Cora does not make that play...

andy said...

Next k coming soon for Lug nut

allan said...

I will tell you what, when the game is on the line, I want Lugo in there.

You know it.

He's a cold-blooded assassin.

andy said...

Cunt sits. That sucks. Just when he was getting good.

andy said...

Jed Lowrie makes that play.

allan said...

The cunt is a pussy.

...

had to say it

nick said...

lugo = cold-blooded assassin. I like it.

I wish joba was still in there. I'd like to see his ERA get nuked.

allan said...

it's that stare -- that says don't fuck with me or when you least expect it -- BAM!

(and i do mean when you least expect it)

Rob said...

Loooooooooog.

nick said...

the assassin with the intangible double!

andy said...

I see it now Allan. Lugo was sent here to destroy Jeter.

It seems they are dueling.

allan said...

nice play, gold glover!

andy said...

So CC Sabathia just became a non-issue for the RedSox

Rob said...

He's like an undercover cop, Lugo. He makes everyone think he's this terrible player who sucks at defense and strikes out a lot, and is generally a stupid stupid man, and then he says "SURPRISE!!! You're under arrest!"

allan said...

how in the hell did CI go to his left so much?

SoSock said...

pretty damn intangible, eh?

allan said...

You can't spell LUGO's D without GOD!

nick said...

or, for that matter, SLUG OD.

allan said...

Lugo could hit .800 if he wanted to, but he picks his spots. Plus he doesn't want to make the other players feel inferior. That's how great he is.

Patrick said...

I will tell you what, when the game is on the line, I want Lugo in there.

There was a good reason why Cora started to come in as a defensive replacement for Lugo late in games.

Still, I agree. He can do the job come playoff time.

allan said...

Gehrig - 184 RBI in 1931.

I've always wondered how do you get that many RBI hitting after Babe Ruth?

SoSock said...

It's time Tito.

allan said...

Giambi did not want to grow the mustache. But Lugo just glared at his upper lip and the hairs came out.

Sarah Haendler said...

Lugo's super power, mustache repilatory!

allan said...

Lugo is Chuck Norris's idol.

Patrick said...

This has the feel of a Yanks Sox game. Lots of tension.

Sarah Haendler said...

Thanks Wake - well done.

allan said...

Hi, Tito. Well done!

SoSock said...

That's right, it's time.

allan said...

Javier Lopez - star of stage, screen and mound!

Patrick said...

I was waiting for the Chuck Norris jokes.

allan said...

I'm not good at them, so just replace Norris with Lugo.

(SoSH was doing the same thing with Jack Cust last year. Great stuff.)

Rob said...

Shipping Up to Boston plays at Yankee Stadium.

Patrick said...

Shipping up to boston?!?

SoSock said...

Giambi did not want to grow the mustache. But Lugo just glared at his upper lip and the hairs came out.

That's absolutely hilarious.
Seriously. I damn near spit out my beer

Rob said...

When Giambi lies, his moustache grows.

Rob said...

Oh cock.

Sarah Haendler said...

Damn you!

SoSock said...

HELL of a play!

allan said...

unbelievable - espn showing nyy stats before and after ejection

OUT!

nick said...

I'm amazed he was out. nice plate blocking, but I'd think a better slide would've gotten by that.

Jack Marshall said...

Tito might as well just let the starters pitch complete games or an automatic 8. The Bullpen is killing me.

allan said...

lugo is up 6th next inning.

Patrick said...

unbelievable - espn showing nyy stats before and after ejection

Oh Giardi! What a hero!

SoSock said...

Good job by MDC there

allan said...

Patrick said...

Let's trade 3 farm hands for a declining closer, say... Hoffman.

Joe Grav said...

I'm home and, wahay, it's a tie game. I'm pissed that the bullpen blew it again, but glad that I'll get to watch the winning run score for the Sox.

allan said...

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

oh god no

tito - wtf?

SoSock said...

OK, I love him and hope he comes thru here, but this makes no sense whatsoever.

Rob said...

Oi.

Joe Grav said...

Even if Varitek hits a jack, this is a stupid move.

Joe Grav said...

Wow good job Tito

allan said...

seriously i hate this move.

Sarah Haendler said...

Well that was effective...

Joe Grav said...

Jake of All Trades said...

allan said...

Only 6 pitches last inning for FB, so it's the top of the order against him in 10.

Sarah Haendler said...

THAT's the Jeemer I know and love!

Patrick said...

We're just a midget dong length from taking this one.

allan said...

the boy is in a serious slump

Rob said...

I wonder what the major league record for amount of games in one day that go to extra innings.

Or, the record for the amount of innings played in one day.

allan said...

Crap.

How about it, Drew?

Patrick said...

He seems like he need a day or two off. We should start Moss for him.

allan said...

Rob said...

Wow. Bot is coming in!

nick said...

Joe Grav said...

that was a big one.

allan said...

Alright, I'm gonna shut down here and head home.

Back around 12:30!

SoSock said...

On the brighter side -
My big league team won last night to go to 5 - 0, then won game 1 of a double-header this afternoon to make it 6 - 0. Game 2 was rained out after 1 scoreless inning and will be made up as part of another double-header in 2 weeks.
Go Nats!
Oh, and DMB ROCKED on Wednesday night. Best damn live show out there right now.

tim said...

Good rant on the globe site.

Oh and did anyone else hear Joe Morgan say that "not all hitters want to know what pitch is coming next" during the 7th (i think) last night? What a moron.

Jack Marshall said...

Tim: REALLY good rant, and thanks for flagging it. I wouldn't write the equivilent here, because Laura would accuse me of being negative, but the guy is 90% correct, especially about Varitek and Francona, whose managing the whole last week has been brain-dead. And reading Manny's PH stats,it seems clear that Lugo and Cash would have been a much better bet than the duo Tito went with.

I see no reason to leave Lowrey in the minors at this point.

nixon33 said...

im still dperessed about the loss. we let that one slip away. i was convinced we were going to win.

laura k said...

Jack, I know that one can be negative and still be correct. It's the constant - and in my opinion, often unwarranted - negativity that I object to.

However, just because I object, doesn't mean it can't be posted here! I'm not a gatekeeper. Just another person with an opinion.

laura k said...

Nix, I was thinking of you last night, you poor guy. It was bad enough for all of us but at least we were able to turn off the TV, you had sit through it.

nixon33 said...

thanks l-girl.
yeah the worst part, as im sure you can remember, spilling out onto river ave. and all the yanks fans screaming and blowing car horns, chanting "boston sucks".
i said to some guy on the train "dont worry, yanks will never make the playoffs".
to which he replied "keep dreaming asshole".

we had it, and we let i slip away. the tons of beer i drank didnt help either. an interesting note for all of you, i dont know if they were showing the dugout, but i didnt see manny in the dugout the WHOLE game until he pinch hit. strange. did you guys see him in there? just wondering if it was my imagination.
also i snuck down to main reserve section 13 after the national anthem and grabbed a seat against the wall, first base side. no one ever showed up!
great seat....
listening to dylan on the ride home "we sit here stranded, though we're all doing our best to deny it".
