G23: Angels 6, Red Sox 4

Angels - 111 011 001 - 6 13 0
Red Sox - 011 020 000 - 4 10 0
For his first career start on three days rest Lester's line (5-9-4-2-1, 81) was pretty much on par with his other starts -- too many baserunners and an Angel run in all but one of his five innings.

But the Red Sox slapped Garland around too. Lugo drove in Drew with a two-out single in the second, Cash began the third with a double and scored on Pedroia's sac fly, and Ortiz drilled a line-drive, two-run homer to right in the fifth. The game was tied 4-4 after five innings.

Hansen made his 2008 debut in the sixth. After two quick outs, he surrendered a solo home run to Kotchman. The Angels got an insurance run against Timlin in the ninth. The Red Sox failed to mount a rally against either Speier, Shields or Rodriguez in the last three innings. They had two men on with one out in the eighth, but Lugo grounded into a double play.

Hansen was sent back to Pawtucket after the game. Justin Masterson will make his major league debut when he starts tomorrow's afternoon game.

***

Matsuzaka is the latest Sock to get the flu, so Jon Lester (5.06, 89 ERA+) gets the ball tonight.

Youkilis is out of the lineup tonight with a sore back.

***

Craig Hansen (not Dusty Brown) was called up and David Pauley was sent back to Pawtucket. Hansen has been great this season: In eight appearances over 12.1 innings, he has allowed three hits, four walks and no runs. Hansen, in today's ProJo:
I've gone back to the way I pitched at St. John's. My mechanics have changed. ... I was able to get a lot of things done in spring training that I needed to. Pitching in different situations, getting myself in different situations and pitching my way through it. It helped out a lot.
***

Jon Garland (4.81, 89 ERA+) / Daisuke Matsuzaka (3.14, 143 ERA+)

In 24.1 innings this season, Garland has faced 109 batters -- and struck out only three of them.
             W L PCT GB
Red Sox 15 7 .682 ---
Orioles 11 9 .550 3.0
Yankees 11 10 .524 3.5
Blue Jays 10 11 .476 4.5
Rays 9 11 .450 5.0
Third-best record in baseball, behind Arizona (15-5, .750) and the Cubs (14-6, .700).

Time for 497!!!

Amy said...

Sounds good, Phrenile, but I did have to look up ramps (but at least I looked it up before looking silly again.)

I am seeing a go ahead run coming up.

Patrick said...

Is it too much to ask for a dong from Man Ram?

Benjamin said...

These few weeks in mid-April are all about ramps and fiddleheads. It's nice to have real vegetables again.

allan said...

and ellsbury flew out a minute ago.
let's get rid of him and bring thurston back. ... or darren lewis.

Jere said...

5-4 putout, and we go to the 8th, down one.

Amy said...

It is pouring here in western MA. Weird. Hope we get the win in before it gets to Boston.

Oh, well, not this time, Manny.

laura k said...

s1c with the 201!

Patrick said...

Not feeling good about this one.

laura k said...

fiddleheads!

*shudder*

s1c said...

Celtics looking crappy going into half time. No worries, Sox will hold them here and then ON FIRE starts the comeback.

Jere said...

No, no, no, I almost used the same theory to Amy, saying, "Oh, no, the under 200 hitter Papi is coming up, not reassuring."

I wasn't knocking Hansen, I was doing what you're doing, showing that you shouldn't judge a guy based on ---well, from what I can tell, other people not liking a guy.

Patrick said...

I've been food for the ticks and thorns so far this spring.

laura k said...

Don't worry Patrick, 8th inning is our fave.

Jere said...

I mean, if people are gonna watch a guy succeed one night, then see him the next night and act like something bad is bound to happen, well, I have to say something.

Patrick said...

LAA score looking like a
binary solo

laura k said...

you shouldn't judge a guy based on ---well, from what I can tell, other people not liking a guy.

On the other hand, you should judge a guy from his performance over the last 2.5 years.

I can't speak for anyone else, but that's the only thing I judge Timlin on.

Are you thinking this is a Timlin-hating bandwagon, and nobody's actually watching the games, we're all just going along with what anyone else says? I think the crew here deserves more credit than that.

Amy said...

Jere, with all due respect, I don't think we are judging Timlin on anything but his piss poor performance his first two outings. I will give him the benefit of the doubt for old times' sake, but I can't say I have confidence in him. Like I said the other night (after all else had done posting), all the 2004 players will always have a special place in my heart except for Damon, but even I, the ultimate sentimentalist, think Timlin's over the hill.

laura k said...

Or if they're gonna watch him fail 10 nights and succeed one night, but ignore the 10 nights and act like everyone else is making shit up, then other people are gonna have to say something.

Erik said...

is there any easier way to use this w/o relaoding and clickign newest each time. I am really lazy

Erik said...

there we go

Jere said...

I just don't see Timlin having done all that bad, right up until last night.

Benjamin said...

Reloading should be enough.

Amy said...

If there is, Erik, I haven't found it...

Amy said...

Jere, you don't remember him that Friday night game giving up a home run to Giambi and getting NO ONE OUT? Or the second time when again he gave up the home run to Giambi? Did he get anyone out that time?

allan said...

is there any easier way to use this w/o relaoding and clickign newest each time. I am really lazy

you could hit your "refresh" button of F5.

...

and we are not shitting on timlin because of what he might be doing AT THAT MOMENT. good lord, jere, we're not that stupid. like laura said, he's beenm a liability since 2005 (with some good outings in the too.)

cash hit a double tonight. that's great. he still can't hit worth a shit.

Erik said...

yeah, i got it now, sorry

Rob said...

You guys bickering about Timlin reminds me of a recurring theme in the movie Big Trouble.

These two guys are on a stakeout. The driver turns the radio on. Talk radio.

Whenever the (Florida) Gators win we're flooded by calls by Gator fans. But now that they've lost, I don't hear any Gators fans calling.

A Gator's fan calls.

"Hi, I'm a Gators fan, and I'm calling."

"...and?"

"Well, you said we don't have the guts to call, and I'm... calling."

The driver turns the radio off, and ten minutes in the movie later, he turns it back on...

"Well, what I'm saying, is I'm a Gators fan, and I'm calling."

So, I have returned. Time for some runs.

Patrick said...

Thanks to no commercials on KLAA I hear Sweet Caroline in it's entirety.

laura k said...

Erik: F5. You must be reeeeally lazy.

Jere said...

Drew in mid-season form. Unfortunately that means mid-2007.

s1c said...

Time for ...

Frag, ON FIRE is cold as ice.

Rob said...

Portland Press Herald (via Rob Bradford's blog): Justin Masterson will pitch tomorrow's game for the Red Sox.

Masterson: "I'm so excited. I can't put it into words. I just hope I can put together a good outing."

laura k said...

Erik, you shouldn't have to click "newest" each time. F5, then if you're not at the comment, hit "end".

Patrick said...

CASEY!

Jere said...

My F5 is "volume up." But I've got apple-R.

Patrick said...

Masterson tomorrow?! SOOOOWEEETT.

Jere said...

Yeah! We needed that! Now we tie it!!!!

Rob said...

Rally time.

Right on schedule.

Patrick said...

Lugo hasn't shown off his dong this year...yet.

Erik said...

i got to admit i wasnt happy with casey when we got him, but
i couldnt be happier with the way it has played out since

KEEP IT GOING. KEEP IT GOING!!!!!!

Jere said...

Wow, I get to see Masterson start live...

Amy said...

I don't have to click on newest, but I always click on the reload signal, never knew about F5.

S1C, here's your opening....

laura k said...

well, from what I can tell, other people not liking a guy.

Timlin aside, this is insulting. You might not have meant it that way, but sheesh.

Rob said...

Crap. 4-6-3 DP.

Benjamin said...

Masterson's getting called up to start tomorrow, apparently.

Jere said...

Shit! Gonna have to be a walkoff now.

Erik said...

Patrick said...

Well, that's the one thing we haven't seen this season, yeah?

Patrick said...

Did anyone one "The Humans are Dead" song? It's really funny.

Amy said...

Btw, pressing "end" does not scroll down for me. I need to scroll down manually. A big pain. I must be getting a callous on my scrolling finger.

Erik said...

Any bets on how masterson will do?

Rob said...

Dale Arnold, to Castig: "Who were you doing the games with, back during World War II?"

Amy said...

OK, Jere, pressure is on your guy.

Patrick said...

I'm guessing a no hitter through 13 innings from Masterson.

laura k said...

Amy, if you click outside the typing box, and hit end, see if it works. You have to be clicked in the page.

Last year gamethreaders told me this and I didn't believe them... but they were right.

allan said...

amy, if you click off to the side of the page and then hit end, does it work? it does for me.

Patrick said...

OMG! F5 and End both work for me! My entire world has changed.

Jere said...

L: You don't see a little copycat Timlin-hating going on here?

What I always thought this was was a joke, you and Allan hate him because he's a right-winger. I hate him off the field for that reason. You say that doesn't matter to you, but you've said "go kill another deer" enough so that it seems like it does.

You took the joke really far because even after last year, when I came out and said, "Hey, you know, he's really not that bad" and he had a not-bad year. But you come out doing the same thing this year. I thought this was a joke. Then he has two shitty outings and a lot of people see your politics-influenced hating, and combined with their tendency to be reactionary Red Sox fans, start hating him too.

Un the meantime, he's not doing that bad! This year or last with few exceptions!

But hey, I hate Drew, so as long as I'm allowed to knock him, too, it's cool.

I just think Timlin is the type of guy you want in your pen, and he keeps proving it.

allan said...

9th: with one out, lyndon will start things off.

Patrick said...

you can also hit 'tab' to get out of the text box so end will work.

Amy said...

I have to still click it repeatedly. It's easier just to scroll down on the touchpad.

Rob said...

Link to Masterson story

Patrick said...

I thought cashiesgoingdeep was leading off the bottom.

Rob said...

Guerrero just stole a base.

...

Amy said...

Jere, I could care less about his politics when he is on the field, much as I don't care about Schilling's or probably most ballplayers.

I find it insulting that you think we are just copy cats. I actually thought Timlin did ok the second half of last season, but I lost confidence after his first two outings THIS season.

laura k said...

L: You don't see a little copycat Timlin-hating going on here?

No. That would never have occured to me. I think it's insulting and condenscending of you to say it.

What I always thought this was was a joke, you and Allan hate him because he's a right-winger.

You are clearly not listening. If I say A, A, A, A, A and you insist I am saying B, then there's no point in discussing it.

Amy said...

Shit, now we need more runs to tie.

Patrick said...

Just setting up a more dramatic 'Tiz dong.

Erik said...

shit, i thought we would see a gem of an arm out of tacoboy there, but oh well, better then damon

Rob said...

Or Manny could take K-Rod deep into the night again, like he did in the DS last October.

Jake of All Trades said...

For comments, I always put the Post Comments (Atom) link from the bottom in an RSS reader for each game. Still have to refresh, but it sorts with most recent on top making it less effort.

Jere said...

If a guy does bad twice and that makes you completely lose confidence in him, you should be pushing very hard to trade Papi.

Patrick said...

If K-Rod ends up facing Manny with two on, he might end up feverish from the PTSD Manny forced apon him.

Rob said...

Bugger. That was promising.

But now it's Lyndon Time.

laura k said...

Ok, $ out of the way, now we can start the rally.

Sarah Haendler said...

They're putting the rally off a bit tonight, dontcha think?

I guess I got home just in time for the walk off...

s1c said...

S1C, here's your opening....

I never make fun of people's computer skills, I do too much training for that.

Time for LBJ to get the train moving.

heng brothers said...

Lug-IDP!

Rob said...

Hmm. Forgot K-Rod was a legitimate closer.

allan said...

If a guy does bad twice and that makes you completely lose confidence in him, you should be pushing very hard to trade Papi.

Do you even read what you type before you post it?

Amy said...

Come on, Jere. There's a big difference between Papi having a slow start and a pitcher causing us to LOSE games. Also a big difference between a 32 year old outfielder and and 42 year old pitcher. If you can't see that, then your heart is clouding your brain.

Patrick said...

Fuck Yeah time!

Amy said...

Shoot, foul.

laura k said...

OK Sarah's here, let's do this thing...

Rob said...

Damn.

The water is clean.

Sarah Haendler said...

or not...

Jere said...

Okay, let's review. Timlin: does fine in 2007. Does bad in first two outings of 2008 after an injury AND a shortened spring training.

So why act like he is done? Unless you have a previous hatred for him that you've made clear? So I understand A and L saying it because that's their thing. But why would anyone else think that?

Amy said...

Damn, our streak is over. Well, given all our sick and hurt players, I think we have one amazing team!

laura k said...

Damn. I guess we can't have a comeback every night. Maybe tomorrow we can take an early lead and hold it. That would be fun.

See you all at 1:30 :)

allan said...

If a guy does bad twice and that makes you completely lose confidence in him, you should be pushing very hard to trade Papi.

I was on Timlin's ass in 2005. It's all in my posts or comments. You can go find them.

I was on Timlin's ass in 2006. It's all in my posts or comments. You can go find them.

I was on Timlin's ass in 2007. It's all in my posts or comments. You can go find them.

I'm on Timlin's ass in 2008. It's all in my posts or comments. You can go find them.

So ... whatever else you do, STOP saying we're on Timlin's ass because of one or two bad pitches in his last outing opr two.

It's beyond ridiculous.

Amy said...

I have NO hatred for Timlin. I defended him last season. I just think that at 42, he's a liability or at least a weak spot that we could fill with someone younger.

Jere said...

redsock: Did you see where Amy said she was just basing her non-confidence in Timlin on JUST the two performances? That's what I was referring to when I said the perfectly sane and thought-out Papi line.

Erik said...

thanks guys, i will come back sometime, and maybe next time i will have something to bring to the table worth saying (as i had nothing good today:)

Jere said...

redsock: YOu have to go back and read this whole thing. I'm not saying what you say I'm saying.

Amy said...

Also, Jere, I would love to be proven wrong.

allan said...

Unless you have a previous hatred for him that you've made clear?

Good God!

You know, you sound EXACTLY like all those Yankee fans you rip for ignoring the facts right in front of their faces in favour of some make-up shit in their heads.

So continue to make shit up about us and Timlin. Knock yourself out. Continue to make and live in your own reality.

I'm through with this shit.

s1c said...

Jere - you have to be kidding me, if memory serves me right you were ripping bot when he gave up the HR to A-rod last year, practically every Daisuke start last year you went on and on about how the Sox over paid for him, how he couldn't pitch, etc., I am also pretty sure that you ripped FY for the first month half and the drew crap went on from day one.

In fact if I am pretty sure that in August we basically told you to quit being so negative. I like Timlin and I want to see him succeed but Jere, he is on the downward slide.

Jere said...

My whole point is you've been hating him all along. But why after he proves you wrong do you come out all over him again?

Amy said...

Bye, Erik. Hope we see you again.

Jere said...

s1c: I don't know who you're thinking of, but that wasn't me.

laura k said...

Timlin: does fine in 2007.

You're still not listening. We complained about him through most of 2007. Were we just making it up then, too?

I understand A and L saying it because that's their thing.

Our thing?? WTF? Unless you mean facts? Performance?

I can't understand why you're acting this way. Disagree, difference of opinion, sure, fine, we all have that. But claiming that people's opinions are based on thin air, or bandwagoning, or the players' politics (which I've repeatedly said is not the case for me)? And repeatedly claiming people's opinions are based on one or two outings - no matter how many times we have the same conversation after another blown save?

I don't get it. You like him, you like him. But you should stop insinuating imaginary motives to the people who see good reason not to like him. It's insulting, and it's unnecessary. And it's beneath you, as it makes you look like an asshole, which you are not.

Amy said...

And Jere, you had no response to my sane and thought out response to your line about Papi.

Jere said...

I'm the most positive Sox fan, never made fun of Papelbon in my life, never ripped Peroia. YOur memory serves incorrect.

Benjamin said...

I assume a loss is not what Hansen was hoping to get.

Jere said...

Okay, Amy--I saw your comment. He could very well be a liability this year. But I think we should give him a chance and not assume he's done after a few outings. It seemed to work last year.

laura k said...

Proves us wrong? What, with one outing? So Lugo must be our hottest hitter, since he went 4-for-4 yesterday.

We're looking overall, the way that baseball demands.

OK, I will try to stop this from my end. It's maddening and it's not going anywhere, so I'll try to shut up.

Amy said...

Jere, I have no problem with that. I just won't have much confidence for a while. No reason to accuse me or others of not thinking for ourselves. That pissed me off. My opinion may be wrong, and I hope Timlin proves it, but it is MY FUCKING OPINION.

At age 55, I sure as hell don't need to follow a crowd....

Amy said...

OK, got that off my chest.

Good night, all. Hope we didn't scare Erik away. :)

Rob said...

My one cent: Timlin still has decent action on his pitches - still has low 90s speed, but his command is getting into trouble. That sinker can be a brilliant way to get out of a jam, but not if it's belt high. We all know this.

What annoys me just a bit is at what point in the game he comes in. I don't like seeing him pitching with a small lead or with the game tied anymore. But I don't think he's done. He still can provide a valuable service to the team.

s1c said...

Jere - If I was wrong (wouldn't be the first time and sure won't be the last) then I apologize.

Jack Marshall said...

Let's see---I gave Timlin 5 games to blow. I think this is THREE.

He's washed up, guys. It's obvious. Nothing to argue about.

Even with the homer, Hansen looked ready to stick. This game would have been a W if Dice-K had been able to pitch, but in the grand scheme of things, I'm betting that it will be remembered because it started the clock on Mike Timlin, and marked the beginning of the Young Stud Era in the Sox pen, with Delcarmen, Hansen and Pap throwing gas.

Rob said...

By the way, Hansen's being optioned back to Pawtucket to make room for Masterson. Francona announced Masterson for tomorrow.

Rob said...

Tito was very high on Hansen's outing. He said he was fantastic, except for that one ball he left up, and Kotchman didn't miss it.

allan said...

Hansen's being optioned back to Pawtucket ...

because he suuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuucks.

:>)

should be fun watching bat masterson tomorrow.

allan said...

it's wasn't even up, really. just not as inside as it should have been. out over the plate and it got walloped.

but his slider looked way better than it did during his last tour of duty. (when it was practically awol)

bot, mdc and hansen = fun for the future.
