G4: Red Sox 5, Athletics 0

Red Sox - 000 000 221 - 5 13 0
Athletics - 000 000 000 - 0 4 0
Strange game. Wasted scoring opportunities by the bushel full for both teams through six innings.

Lester (6-2.-3-0-3-3, 94) turned in a nice performance, much improved from last week. There were some rough patches -- he issued his three walks on four pitches each -- but Houdini was helped by three double plays -- in the 2nd, 3rd and 4th innings. Oakland got three hits and three walks off Lester, but got only one runner past first base.

After allowing a two-out single in the seventh, Bryan Corey came in to get the third out. Corey allowed a leadoff single in the 8th, but retired the next three A's, two by strikeout. Manny Delcarmen pitched a perfect 9th: 6-3, F7, 3U.

Harden struggled in the first, allowing a single to Pedroia and walking Yook and Tizzle. But he stopped the rally, fanning Manny and Lowell and getting Drew to ground to first. Once he was gone (5-4-0-4-6, 86), the Sox pounced.

The Sox left the bases loaded in the 6th, but finally scored in the 7th. Yook doubled to left center and Ortiz crushed a home run to right. Five straight singles to start the 8th (four of them to the exact same spot in left field off Lenny DiNardo) made it 4-0. Tek donged in the 9th for the final run.

In the 18 innings in Oakland, the A's scored only one run on seven hits.

Jon Lester (44 ERA+) / Rich Harden (233 ERA+)
Pedroia, 2B
Youkilis, 1B
Ortiz, DH
Ramirez, LF
Lowell, 3B
Drew, RF
Varitek, C
Crisp, CF
Cora, SS

I'd like to see MDC get a save chance.

allan said...

Can anyone think of any better outings they've seen from Lester?

his return in cleveland last year? (though i actually missed that game)

Rob said...

Oi. That was ugly. Pedroia ate some grass there.

Ron said...

Fuck No! That's gonna piss him off.

--

If this is the Lester we get to keep after pulling back on the Santana deal, I heartily approve.

G'day Lester...

Jere said...

shit. I didn't see it on any replay, but on the original it looked like Drew was breaking back. Maybe had a chance to call of FY if he hadn't. Can't confirm on the replays they showed, though.

Rob said...

Very promising last two games here on the pitching front. Dice and Lester with two fantastic outings, and Papelbon dominating last night after the shakyish outing in Tokyo.

allan said...

katherine tappen is an attractive woman.

Rob said...

Francona showing a lot of confidence in Bryan Corey here.

Rob said...

katherine tappen is an attractive woman.

She does all of the studio shows for the Boston Bruins. Let's just say I'm not going to suddenly stop being a Bruins fan anytime soon.

allan said...

yook!

Jere said...

yeah Yoooooouk. Very key!!!!

s1c said...

katherine tappen is an attractive woman

and every time I see her, I hear her saying "consider yourself flashed".

Youk!!!!!!

Jere said...

"very unique" sets of pop ups there.

Benjamin said...

ish: 9/7/2007 @ Orioles.

Lord Lynch said...

A great outing by Lester, and despite Corey giving me a mild palpitation, we get out of the 7th.

Really impressed with the old MLB TV - I wish I'd got it last year now!

Jere said...

base hit Tek

allan said...

tek - thinking about that batting title.

Lord Lynch said...

Having bigged up MLB TV - I missed the base hit.

Jere said...

coupla hits for Coco today..... two on, 0 out

s1c said...

Why the frag is he bunting?

allan said...

i'll take a bunt from einstein.

Jere said...

pitch 1: Cora misses the bunt. pitch 2: Cora fouls off the bunt. Great.

Ron said...

fangraphs is cool phrenile, thanks!

Jere said...

I like the sac here. Well, not anymore of course....

Rob said...

phrenile - Good find. I'd agree that particular outing edges this one. 1/3 less innings today, one less hit, one more walk, one less K. Very close. We'll see how he does next outing.

I've always been very optimistic about Lester. He's got the stuff to get it done.

Jere said...

Three straight hits to the same spot. Loaded, no out. Now we pull away.

allan said...

hell yeah

dinardo -- embedded sock

Rob said...

Pedroia gets another chance to "impress his homies."

Good hitting by Einstein.

tim said...

alright pedroia, right the wrong of last time you were up with ducks on the pond!

Jere said...

The other stuff on Fangraphs looks cool enough, but I can't see any point in the win probabliity thing. Is anyone watching this game and thinking, "I wonder what the chances are that the Red Sox win this game..."

Four singles in a row to the same spot! 3-0 us.

Ron said...

Fuuuuuuuckkkkkk Yyyeeeeeeaaaaaahhhhhhh!!!!!!

Rob said...

One thing I like about Uncle Joe: He's not bashful about referring to guys by their first names or nicknames. He said Petey.

Speaking of Petey... FY FTW!

s1c said...

FY!!!

Jere said...

"I've always been very optimistic about Lester. He's got the stuff to get it done."

Me too! I was gonna bring this up but I didn't wanna sound I toldyasoish. I just feel like people think he's this completely overrated guy and I've never got that from him. People say he's on the team because Theo has a crush on him and stuff, and were not confident going into game 4 last year in the WS. I was.

Jere said...

"Uncle Joe: He's not bashful about referring to guys by their first names or nicknames. He said Petey."

Except for Gedman! (Last nite's listener's know what I'm talking about.)

allan said...

OAK
3 hits last night
3 hits so far today

tim said...

Blow 'er open now!

Benjamin said...

jere: I find it good for bounding my optimism and pessimism. It's a good reminder of basic principles like "the home team is advantaged when it comes up to bat after the visiting team left it tied".

But yeah, it's mostly something to fiddle with between pitches.

Rob said...

Santiago Casilla broke into the major leagues under the name Jairo Garcia in 2000, then changed his name to Santiago Casilla in 2005. Interesting.

Ron said...

Home Plate is open, go ahead and put Youk on.

Jere said...

oh yeah, we're pullin away.... Yoooooouk

Ron said...

Or, you know, that too.

allan said...

OAK fans getting annoyed -- LOUD boos.

s1c said...

Station to Station, can Papi give us the double dong?

YOUUUUUUK!!!!!

tim said...

woot possum chin!

Rob said...

Except for Gedman! (Last nite's listener's know what I'm talking about.)

I was listening to the game last night - and I don't know what you're talking about. That's also because I was busy nodding off and trying to stay awake.

allan said...

papi dongs here and i bet 97% of the A's fans get up and go home.

Jere said...

I've been thinking the A's fan booing is always them trying to drown out Sox cheers. Which, of course, start up when we're rallying/scoring.

s1c said...

papi dongs here and i bet 97% of the A's fans get up and go home.

Are there even 100 A's fans in attendance?

Ron said...

Holy Shit, I forgot there were no outs.

Come on MBM, Grand Dong.

allan said...

another chance for being to get 1 closer to gehrig.

#21 -- let's do it.

Rob said...

Casilla was certainly up to the task on that 3-2 pitch.

But you're only halfway through the dangerous duo.

s1c said...

Time for the MUMMY!!!

tim said...

Alright, Manny hit and Doc hit and the whole team will have base hits.

Jere said...

Ish: The Gedman story is at 25:45 here. Took me a while to get it out, but I was calling a game... Wasn't implying you weren't listening. Thanks for tuning in! (And yeah, I should've said people who heard the entire thing beginning to end, which I don't expect people to do.)

allan said...

fuck the heck???????????

ah well
4-0 us

tim said...

Except for Gedman! (Last nite's listener's know what I'm talking about.)

Haha, yeah...i wanted to hear the end of that story, that's when my computer crapped out/youcastr crapped out.

Rob said...

They get a couple of runs, but you never want to leave the bases loaded. So that makes it - 13 LOB?

tim said...

Wow, not manny-esque at all. Alright, time to head home from work. Important Bs game in an hour.

allan said...

Lyndon in LF for Manny

Rob said...

Tim, do you chat anywhere during the B's game? I'll certainly be watching that one.

allan said...

lopez and MDC up

allan said...

"framed by varitek" -- looked good.

Jere said...

Corey not missin by much

allan said...

hannahan missing by a lot.

Rob said...

Dan Johnson last year took 64.5% of the pitches he saw. Today, he swings at the first one.

allan said...

alright, dogs gotta eat btw innings. hurry it along, corey.

Rob said...

Hannahan is a fun name to say.

Rob said...

Pedroia's not having a great day in the field.

allan said...

didnt think he'd get anyone.

Rob said...

it's nice to see the opposite team's closer coming into the game just to get some work in.

allan said...

sox just had 5 straight singles.
a's have 7 hits in these two games.

allan said...

ellis millars one, then gets caught looking.

Jere said...

JereGraphs gives us a 98 percent chance to win this one.

Ron said...

ellis millars one

Love how your redsocked that.

Jere said...

Toughest ball is the one hit right atcha. Or something.

Rob said...

I love how Ryan Sweeney looked around when he caught that ball, as if he was hoping nobody saw him.

I meant to do that.

allan said...

SL & MDC throwing.

Ron said...

Varitek millars one.

Rob said...

Oh man. There was a guy who was right where the long foul ball landed, but couldn't get the foul ball... he was wearing a Varitek shirt.

Jere said...

Yeah! Tek was just dyin to get that Dong!!!

allan said...

CAPTAIN DONG!!!!!!!!!!!

Rob said...

Tek Straightens up! I love it when that happens! Foul dong. Fair dong.

Ron said...

Street reminds me of a (presumably) less racist Mussina.

allan said...

Tek, to umps while jogging: "You think that one cleared the fucking fence, you blind motherfruckers?"

Jere said...

Yeah I can't believe that guy missed that foul dong in the stands. I think the blonde girl we saw laughing when the other guy was walking away with the ball was the girl sitting with him.

Rob said...

So Ortiz and Varitek are waking up from their funks. Good good good.

Benjamin said...

I take it Tek's sleeping better stateside?

Zenslinger said...

And we were worried about Varitek. Last night and today...hitting well.

allan said...

And Amy's off spending some time with her family ...

Rob said...

Yeah I can't believe that guy missed that foul dong in the stands. I think the blonde girl we saw laughing when the other guy was walking away with the ball was the girl sitting with him.

That's why if I were that guy I'd be wearing my Okajima shirt. I don't want a ball he pitched to come near me if I was sitting out there. Unless it was foul, of course.

allan said...

that is some ugly facial hair on mdc.

Rob said...

MDC is a guy I have high hopes for this year.

Rob said...

MDC could instantly improve the feng shui of any room with that thing on his chin.

Jere said...

I've had worse facial hair. You never realize how bad it looked til you look back after you've shaved it off.

Amy said...

Heard Tek's dong on the radio! So happy...

allan said...

that looked deep off the bat, but a can of corn for LBJ.

1 more, manny, then it's off to the great white north.

Rob said...

How much snow do you have up there, ya think?

Rob said...

Yooouk!!!! Fitting way to set a new major league record for consecutive errorless games for 1B.

Amy said...

Game over. Good for Lester, Good for Papi, Good for Tek. Good for us!

Jere said...

3 out of 4 IN Oakland. Okay, half in Oakland. The Great Space Coaster cruises to Canada....

s1c said...

That is a wrap people, put this one away as the Sox go to the frozen north for three!!!

allan said...

actually the last 2 days have been sunny -- and our back yard is just about clear.

just a bunch of ice/snow way in the back. the rest is muddy/mucky.

Ron said...

Nice effort all around.

Looking forward to Toronto.

allan said...

On pace for 122 wins.

Rob said...

just a bunch of ice/snow way in the back. the rest is muddy/mucky.

Same here. My grandmother lives up in Caribou, Maine... they set an all-time snowfall record up there of over 180 inches of snow. Of course, it's easy to forget that Toronto is basically due west from here. Maybe a touch north.

Amy said...

And Amy's off spending some time with her family ...

A person does need to eat, ya know. Plus I got in the car just in time to hear Tek's AB and the foul dong and the fair dong.

Rob said...

This post-pre-game thing is going to be interesting. Combination post-Red Sox, pre-Bruins.

allan said...

Amy's saying "dong".

A line has been crossed!

Benjamin said...

Ba dump ba bump. Bump ba dump.

Ron said...

Amy - nice new avatar. Odd, I always pictured the 12-year-old Tek with a a goatee.

Amy said...

Amy's saying "dong".

A line has been crossed!

The dangerous thing about hanging out here is that I forget which terms are JOS only and which are commonly used in baseball. Imagine if I referred to Tek's great dong outside of this place?

Now, what IS the origin of that term in reference to a home run?

Amy said...

Thanks, Chief. I owe thanks to Redsock for the photo--he sent it to me last season, and I saved it to my laptop hard drive.

I imagine him at least with a crew cut as a 12 year old. He had a better haircut then.

allan said...

Imagine if I referred to Tek's great dong outside of this place?

I was under the impression you did that, actually.

Now, what IS the origin of that term in reference to a home run?

The Glossary directs us to August 24, 2007.

Benjamin said...

Amy: it's likely in the sense of a bell's getting rung. See also "dinger".

Rob said...

Nice thing about split-post-pre-game show... Kathryn Tappen and the Bruins analyst are sitting in this sort of living room place, sitting on sofas. Get to see Kathryn's nice legs.

/dude

Rob said...

That was right around when you guys started moderating. Heh. Barbara.

allan said...

Jere was on fire for that game. Right before he brought "dong" into the lexicon, he broke out "dicks on the pond":

Jere said...
Nice! 5-1. Speaking of "ducks on the pond," am I the only one who says "dicks on the pond" when the Yanks have the bases loaded?

ish said...
Heh. Dicks on the pond. That's great.

Jere said...
""Who the fuck calls a home run a "dong"?"
Hahaha! Me! It actually is used sometimes, which I can't believe, so of course I'm gonna use it. I think it's hilarious.

***

that was the day a troll named barbara disruted things. he (um, i mean "she") took offense to jere using the word "dong" a little before this (or he thought it was stupid).

well, if it pisses off a troll ...... and since then .............

allan said...

/dude

I'll bet people other than dudes are digging KT.

allan said...

Whoa -- did ish remember Barbara or did he check the link?

allan said...

I believe Barbara is also Keith -- who is the MFY fan I mentioned during the Jere interview (who followed our game threads all summer long, often responding to a comment of mine in less than a minute). He was banned, though, so you never saw them.

Haven't heard from him since the ALDS.

I wonder why.

allan said...

Here it is!!!!

Jere, Friday, August 24, 2007, 3:31PM:
"Thought he had a dong. I'll take it, though. Nice job, Tek!"

Rob said...

Whoa -- did ish remember Barbara or did he check the link?

I remember those last few games of unmoderated game threads, where we had all that trouble with the person named Barbara. But that was right around the beginning of my game threadding days.

allan said...

I hit Channel 22 and .......

IT'S BUFFY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Rob said...

I did something I've never done before... might never do it again.

I went to that archived game thread and searched for "dong"

allan said...

i would have thought we moderated long before that. but i guess not.

allan said...

Jays TV guy Pat Tabler, on Fruitbat: "You know what you're gonna get, that great slider."

Errr.....

Rob said...

I'll be flipping back and forth between the Bruins and the Blue Jays game on ESPN2.

allan said...

Jays graphic shows AJ Burnett's record last year as 10-8, Tabler says:

"10 wins up, 8 wins down."

Oy.

allan said...

I was thinking I wasn't going to watch the Jays, but now I might. Gotta get some food first though. ... It's true, you gotta eat.

Rob said...

Fastest slider in MLB right there.

Rob said...

Dave O'Brien and Orel Hershiser on ESPN2. As good a team as you can hope for.

Amy said...

It was fun looking back at the thread. Must have been before I started posting. Now I will have to figure out how to find when I first posted, but I don't recall the first dong talk. Good thing it wasn't my first game thread---might have scared me away.

Ron said...

Just flipped to ESPN2 in time to see Scrappy-Doo scrap himself to the plate.

And I was right - Street and Mussina do look alike, and have a similar win windup from the stretch.

Food time...

allan said...

Jays get one on a couple of hits and an HGH error.

allan said...

Amy: You left an Iraq comment on Sept 20, but did not post in Clay's no-no on Sept 1.

"Hi everyone. I have missed the back and forth of JOS but have been listening to most games on the radio in the car lately. OK, basehit for Crisp. Perhaps we can score a run?"

That doesn't sound like a first post.

tim said...

Tim, do you chat anywhere during the B's game? I'll certainly be watching that one.

Nah, never have. Mainly because I dont really know where. Gonna go watch it now though...Glad to get home and see the end result of the game. Back to hockey mode for now.

allan said...

The search for Amy's first post continues:

Amy said...
Mon Sep 03, 07:43:00 AM
Thanks for all those quotes. I also missed seeing the game live due to a damn social commitment. Turned on the radio in the car as we left and heard them interviewing Bucholz about the no hitter and cursed very loud about missing the game. I wish I had been there for the "funnest" game of the season. Must have been amazing, even just seeing it on TV.

unbelievable plays by pedroia!

allan said...

WAIT! I think this is it. The First Thing's First headline!

Amy said...
Tue Aug 28, 03:26:00 PM
I absolutely love that a Red Sox blog has a debate about punctuation!
I think the Herald was trying to be clever (big mistake on their part). They were trying to say that the first thing the Sox need to do is capture first place in the division, that is, "The First Thing IS First" Place. At the same time they are pointing out that to get there, the first things they have to do is beat the Yankees, that is, "First things first."
I am sure they are regretting that attempt to be clever...

Ron said...

Wells dong.

Jere said...

Wow, great stuff going on. Origin of dong, origin of Amy....

Just realized I'm getting the Yanks with Dave O'Brien. So many empty seats behind the plate....

Abreu O'Neills it on a hop.

does scutaro try to steal EVERY time he gets to first?

I can tell announcers will be talkign about the CI Sheppard tape during every single game this year.

I'm already sick of it.

allan said...

CI dead diddley dead at 2nd!!!

Jere said...

Man, I was about to be very pissed. Glad they got him at second. Did anyone just hear Hershiser kissing Jeter's butt and making a major mistake?

Jere said...

He said that Jeter "dates women who keep their mouths shut...."

allan said...

I'm disappointed Jetes didn't go into second spikes-high.

allan said...

He said that Jeter "dates women who keep their mouths shut...."

Ummm, that's rather unfortunate.

allan said...

Also funny that a guy named Orel said that!

allan said...

Taking a Futurama break, but will still check comments.

Evening, fellers. Been keeping a distant eye on this Yankees game while watching the Bruins, who lost in overtime. Disappointing on the hockey front, but a fan of Boston sports has to be very happy tonight. Sox win, Celtics win, Bruins get a point in the standings, and the Yankees are losing.

Can't have it all, but there's always a bright side.

I guess I should say:

"I'm also using the avatar!"

I guess the "fans" realize that there is no way the mighty Yankees could possibly get 3 runs in an inning.

Jere said...

The seats behind the plate have been empty all night... now there's just nobody left. You buy tix to a night game practically in March, you should be HAPPY with 42 degrees, which is what it is in NYC right now.
