G53: Red Sox 9, Athletics 4

Athletics - 002 020 000 - 4 13 0
Red Sox - 000 032 13x - 9 14 1
Victor Martinez went 5-for-5, with a career-high four doubles, leading Boston's comeback.

Martinez has had three other five-hit games: July 16, 2004 (3 HR, 7 RBI), July 4, 2006, and August 2, 2009. Martinez hit three doubles against the Twins about two weeks ago, on May 20.

Martinez doubled with one out in the fifth, Kevin Youkilis singled, and Adrian Beltre lined a three-run dong over the Wall, cutting Oakland's lead from 4-0 to 4-3. In the sixth, the first three Red Sox batters walked. Dustin Pedroia's GIDP tied the game and Martinez's ground rule double into the triangle gave the Sox a 5-4 lead.

A two-out walk by J.D. Drew, followed by Bill Hall's triple, made it 6-4 -- and the Sox batted around in the eighth to put the game on ice. With one out, Pedroia doubled, Martinez doubled, Youkilis singled; after David Ortiz flew out, Beltre singled and Drew singled. There were a couple of wild pitches, too.

Lackey (6-12-4-2-4, 116) allowed a small army of base runners, but stranded most of them, including seven in the 4th-5th-6th innings.

The Blue Jays led the Rays 5-0 after six innings, but Tampa got three in the seventh and (aided by five walks) four in the ninth and won 7-6. The Yankees beat the Orioles 3-1.

East: NYY 2.5 GB, TOR 4.5 GB, BOS 5.5 GB.
Example
Gio Gonzalez / John Lackey
Scutaro, SS
Pedroia, 2B
Martinez, C
Youkilis, 1B
Ortiz, DH
Beltre, 3B
Drew, RF
Hall, LF
McDonald, CF
Oakland is 28-24 and is 1 GA of the Rangers in the AL West.

The A's have scored 205 runs and allowed 212 runs (expected record: 25-27). They went 16-12 in May despite scoring 99 runs and allowing 113. They have won eight of their last 10 games and 10 of their last 14. (Fangraphs' Matt Klaassen on the A's.)

Boston is 29-23, 5 GB Tampa Bay.

In his last four starts, Lackey has allowed 31 hits and 16 walks in 24.1 innings (6.29).
I've looked at some of those walks and they weren't really walks. I've gone back and looked. My control is not as bad as it seems. ... I'm going to be OK. I'm not worried about it.
The A's have allowed only 21 earned runs in their past 10 games (27 runs overall). In six of the 10 games, Oakland has allowed 0 or 1 run.

Michael Silverman, Herald:
Red Sox starters were 6-6 with a 4.86 ERA in April, a perfect reflection of the team's overall mediocrity that month.

But with Jon Lester leading the way, they rebounded in May.
Starters ERA:
            APR MAY DIFF
Rays 2.76 3.40 -0.64
Yankees 3.41 3.94 -0.53
Blue Jays 4.02 4.46 -0.44
Red Sox 4.86 4.32 +0.54
The Red Sox traded Jonathan Van Every to the Pirates for minor league catcher Josue Peley. This will most likely be the last time you hear Peley's name (because he has hit .186/.241/.234 in two seasons of A ball).

Also at 7 PM:
Rays/Blue Jays

Orioles/Yankees
June 1 in Baseball History

1918: Trailing the Yankees 5-4, the White Sox load the bases in the ninth inning with no outs. Chick Gandil hits a line drive to New York third baseman Frank Baker, who starts a game-ending triple play.

1923: The Giants score in every inning and beat the Phillies 22-8.
Giants - 421 155 121 - 22 23 0
Phillies - 140 110 010 - 8 15 0
1925: Lou Gehrig pinch-hits for Pee Wee Wanninger, beginning his streak of playing in 2,130 consecutive games.

2000: Tomo Ohka of the Pawtucket Red Sox pitches a perfect game (on only 76 pitches!) against the Charlotte Knights, winning 2-0. It is only the 3rd perfect game in the 117 years of the International League. Three years later, on August 10, 2003, Bronson Arroyo of the Paw Sox will pitch the IL's 4th perfect game.

FKRs are really something. If they weren't in our division, I'd like them.

Nooooooooo, they suck. :-p

Oh, l-girl! Not writers! Even a letter from a publisher with check enclosed just leads to dark and paranoid ruminations....

laura k said...

But John, you're talking about getting published. I'm talking about writing. Two completely distinct things.

laura k said...

Nooooooooo, they suck.

Thank you Andy.

laura k said...

So Joe, do you love NYC?

johngoldfine said...

You're making me LOL over here--cut it out!

allan said...

okay, jays down by 2 ...

I'm guessing none of you played the role-playing game "Paranoia", but...

The Computer is your friend. Happiness is mandatory.

johngoldfine said...

I'd be happy with some insurance runs, speaking of paranoia.

Kathryn said...

12 hits against Lackey. Lucky only four scored.

allan said...

"published" and "writing"

yes, very rarely connected.

Joe Gravellese said...

L, that's right, I haven't been on here since my trip.

Had to turn down the job down there as relocating is not an option right now.

However, my day trip was amazing and I'm psyched for future visits. (I'm going on June 8 to try out for Who Wants to be a Millionaire - got called in to try out after applying for four years!)

It was my first time really getting to go all over the place because my traveling partner had a very similar attitude to me, very adventurous.

We basically went from the Bronx all the way to Battery Park and back to Penn Station all in one day. Loony.

nick said...

Pedey got a hit! May the logjam be busted through and thoroughly.

allan said...

"full bore"

man, these guys suck in the OF. running like no-head chickens

laura k said...

Joe, I haven't been here either, I was off consorting with commies.

Too bad about the job, but I guess it just wasn't "it". The trip sounds great!! Nothing like traveling with an adventurer. (Ask Allan. :) )

IIRC, another trip to NYC was more of the Disney variety. This sounds like the real thing.

nick said...

RBI double for Wells in the bottom of the 9th. 7-6. 2 outs... c'mon jays!

nick said...

never mind.

johngoldfine said...

"running like no-head chickens"

:)

That's the kind of color commentator I'd like to hear!

laura k said...

And I can't believe you're auditioning for Millionaire! Very cool.

Someone here had a partner on Jeopardy. I'll say no more.

Kathryn said...

"running like no-head chickens"

I just quoted that to my husband. It got a chuckle.

allan said...

gotta type fewer words
shorten the usual expression

More insurance.

Runs=good!!!

And yes, this trip was pretty legit. We got the harebrained idea at 4 AM that we would go to the nearest newsstand to the New York Times building and get the morning's first copy of the Times.

Obviously, it doesn't work like that.

But when you've been awake for like 20 hours, it seems like it makes sense.

SoSock said...

Wow. 12 hits in 6 innings but only 4 runs for our opponent du jour.

Lucky Lacky

I'm dethreading for the night. Don't drink the water, people. It is DIRTY.

SoSock said...

Is 4 runs RamRam proof?

nick said...

g'night!

Joe Gravellese said...

"dethreading" ... i like it

laura k said...

Joe, it might not work like that, but getting the Times the night before in the middle of the night is a great NYC thing. Allan and I once waited in Times Sq for a paper to come out b/c I had a story in it. It's like a time warp or something.

OK, now good night! :)

Beltre you SUCK.

For hates' sake, I stab at thee....!

Sorry, channeling my inner Mariner again.

Kathryn said...

G'night L.

Crappy movies, though.

allan said...

so lackey "pitched well enough to win"

Kathryn said...

Yeah, he really deserves that W.

SoSock said...

OK, those-of-you-who-are-able-to-actually-WATCH-the-game. Who's it gonna be?

Maybe Bill Hall?

SoSock said...

There it is - Nelson. GDGD can be so behind sometimes.

allan said...

nelson/tek in

SoSock said...

Was just looking thru the box. 4 doubles for V-Mart. Nice. 3 hits and 3 ribbies for Beltre. Also nice

allan said...

it's been a good game ... since the middle of the 5th.

Patrick said...

Ahhh yes, the obligatory Suzuki hit.

Joe Gravellese said...

Lackey was a WARRIOR tonight, deserves that win. way more impressive than a 2-hit loss.

allan said...

tek - make him throw strikes.

Ok, is this irony, because I can't tell.

Pepe Lepew said...

The Red Sox in this game remind me of Mrs. Whosit?

Benjamin said...

Yay.

Patrick said...

Stinky, smelly water

allan said...

Lackey sucked again, but the water is very Muddy!!! Via Blue Light!

Joe Gravellese said...

Win.

Kathryn said...

Dirty>>Clean

Benjamin said...

Beltre's eyes/expression during the high-five receiving line are hilarious.

Joe Gravellese said...

Ok, is this irony, because I can't tell.

yes

nick said...

So, MFY, Rays, and Sox all come from behind in the later half (or very latter in the rays case).

Dirty is dirty good.

SoSock said...

Ballgame - Ends in a dirty pond.

I also noticed looking back that the A's went ott in the 1st, so all 12 of those hits were scrunched into 4 innigs of pitching. And only 4 runs to show for it.
Lacky be Lucky indeed.

nick said...

Red Sox fan Scott Preston recently emailed MLB.com this testimonial from his home in Wellington, New Zealand: "This is my fourth year with MLB.TV and it's almost as good as a girlfriend."

SoSock said...

So if I'm thinking correctly, which is never a given, we are now tied with the Jays and still 3 behind MFY and 5.5 behind FKR.
And June just started.
And we're getting hotter by the week.
VERY doable.
All aboard!

VMart before the game: .257/.311/.449 (.760 OPS)

VMart after the game: .279/.330/.488 (.810 OPS)

5-for-5 with 4 doubles will do a lot for your line, eh.
