Red Sox - 000 003 000 - 3 7 1Once again, the Red Sox rely on Timlin in a tie game in the ninth inning when Papelbon is presumably available. And once again, that decision ends in a quick loss.
Mariners - 201 000 001 - 4 8 1
Brad Mills was calling the shots, after Terry Francona was ejected (along with Lugo) in the fifth inning, shortly after Matsuzaka left with a possible hip injury. In the ninth, Balentien reached on an infield single that Cora could not field in the hole. Balentien moved to second on Cairo's bunt and took third on Reed's grounder to second. After Ichiro was walked intentionally, Lopez lined a game-winning single past Lowell at third down the left field line.
... Timlin -- never a good decision.
(Although, honestly, Old Yeller did alright, all things considered. If Cora makes the play in the hole, everything might have been fine and the game might have gone to the 10th.)
Dice allowed three early runs before Manny tied the game with his 499th career dong.

Daisuke Matsuzaka (2.40, 180 ERA+) / Miguel Batista (6.47, 61 ERA+)
Clay Buchholz could come off the disabled list on Wednesday, but he'll make at least one more start for Pawtucket -- Friday against Durham.
Jon Lester was named the AL Player of the Week. (His father has been diagnosed with lymphoma.) ... Julian Tavarez has signed with the Brewers.

1 – 200 of 857 Newer› Newest»The Washington Post today has an astounding article, which, if true, shows the Yankees brain trust have lost their minds. It says that the Yankees see Joba Chamberlain filling the role of "a Beckett" in this year's rotation, making their rotation a play-off threat. Talk about unfair expectations! Clemens took three years to become dominating; Ryan took longer. Projecting a rookie into the staff ace is ridiculous. It's happened, yes. But it's never LIKELY to happen. Poor Joba. Set up to fail.
Wow. Never thought I'd feel sorry for a Hutt... Pretty dumb at the toilet these days.
Projecting a rookie into the staff ace is ridiculous.
Yes -- we can see how well putting unreasonable pressure on young pitchers who have shown promise has worked out for the Yanks this year.
In completely and utterly unrelated news, Ian Kennedy's given up four runs in the bottom of the 2nd to erase the four-run lead the Yanks built on a couple of HRs (including a 3-run HR from Damon).
Well, that's not completely true; a passed ball and an A-Rod throwing error helped with the fourth run. The first three came on Millar and Hernandez HRs.
The Globe says the lineups are thus:
Crisp, CF
Pedroia, 2B
Ortiz, DH
Ramirez, LF
Lowell, 3B
Drew, RF
Varitek, C
Casey, 1B
Lugo, SS
Suzuki, CF
Lopez, 2B
Vidro, DH
Ibanez, LF
Beltre, 3B
Johjima, C
Balentien, RF
Cairo, 1B
Betancourt, SS
Maybe they mean JtC will be a "2006 Beckett". That's well withn the realm of possibility.
If the guy can be an effective starter, he should start. Otherwise, he's being wasted in the pen.
Whether he can sustain his pitches over 6-7 innings is a whole other matter.
Dear Sox Bats: Pound the poet.
Your humble servant, JoS
two outs nobody on and the Yanks get a single and a double, 5-4 them, top 4.
And now a fuckin dong, 7-4.
Ugh, Abreu HR, 7-4 Yanks.
In other news, our divisional rivals are down 7-2 to Texas.
Heh heh.
And now a fuckin dong, 7-4.
&
Ugh, Abreu HR, 7-4 Yanks.
Looks like they have a decent shot at stepping slightly outside the basement for a day.
well they blew the last 4 run lead, let's see if they can blow this one, as it's now 8-4.
A-Rod error #2.
Ohlendorf comes in for IPK -- why not our stretching out Joba (or, he's probably known to Yank fanks by the telling initials J.C. -- "He's the Savior!")
I'm watching the ESPN game tonight. Dodgers at Cubs. Hiroki Kuroda has really turned out to be a good signing for Los Angeles. 1-0 Dodgers.
Kuroda this season: 2-3, 62 IP, 3.48 ERA, 125 ERA+, 1.27 WHIP, 18 BB, 34 K
TEX - 250 0
FKR - 020 2
Only two of the Texas runs are earned, though.
Two-run jackson for Mora.
8-6 now, as Mora dongs
8-7!!!
Yanks lead only 8-7 now. A real day for HRs there in Camden, eh.
On the Yankees Radio Network driven by Jeep, they think Joba can.... HOME RUN Luke Scott!!! 8-7!
They think he can throw 65 pitches... in 5 innings. Perhaps, but do you really expect him to start his first ever game in the majors and...
TIE GAME!!! Buckethead!!!
...throw 65 pitches in five innings?
EIGHT dongs in this game and they're only in the fifth.
8-8 on a Millar DONG!!! The ninth of the game
So... safe to say Camden Yards lets the dongs outside. For sure.
Two four-run leads completely blown in four innings. I love the '08 Yanks!!!
Watching Kuroda vs. Fukudome. Interesting matchup.
What's the over/under on Hughes and Kennedy ever getting a win this year?
John Sterling, earlier... "There have been eight home runs in this game!"
Just now: "I have been corrected... (in the background) 1, 2, 3, 4, 5.... The Orioles have had 5 home runs... there have been NINE home runs in this game."
He actually seemed a little excited when the O's went back to back.
Long AB for Fukudome. 4.3 pitches per AB that leads the NL for Fukudome. And he walks.
Yankees radio announcers mentioning perhaps a trip to the DL for Kennedy.
Might that mean....more IGAWA?
Record for home runs in a game: 12.
That dong-a-thon is crackin' me up.
Yawn, these west coast games are trying to my patients. I'll be so glad when they are back east.
NYY - 040 40
BAL - 040 04
You can't teach that. You have to be born knowing how to get picked off second.
Awww, Jetes got nailed!
Very "Un-Jeter-like" according to John Sterling.
Baserunning 101, by Derek Jeter.
oh god i love it
what a crazy game in baltimore!
Captain Early 90's Hairdo gets picked off!
Chocolate Rain!
Macha-ry at the NESN studios. (Both Lou and Ken at desk with TC on the pre-game right now.)
C.R.!
Yankees just signed Ben Broussard to a minor league contract.
ken and lou at the desk...lou as in lou merloni?
i cant see the pregame and trying to figure out who this lou is?
oh yeah - tonight is mockery's first day on the job, right?
Yeah, Lou Merloni.
Yeah they're easing him in by having Macha hold his hand I guess.
The way they're going, it looks like Merloni's there to hold Macha's hand.
I only want to see the O's hitting in the chocolate rain ...
chocolate rain
chocolate rain
...
I thought Edwar Ramirez's photo last year was weird enough. This year he puts the FU in fugly.
Hinske impersonates Lugo and grounds into an rbi doubleplay.
TEX - 250 000

Damn you Markakis. Stop slumping.
"If the guy can be an effective starter, he should start. Otherwise, he's being wasted in the pen."
Redsock, would you apply this to Papelbon as well? I don't disagree with you at all, by the way: recall I was the one bellyaching about not shifting Pap to starter in'06 when the rotation was falling apart.
But I'd think Joba and Pap are pretty good equivilents, no? Or do you feel Pap is an exception?
There are a few differences. Right now, JtC is an 8th inning guy, Bot was the closer. Also, Bot's shoulder was an issue, no?
There were questions whether Bot had the 3rd pitch to compete as a starter. Not clear whether Joba has the pitches, though I do remember reading something about how much he'd have to dial down his velocity if starting.
I'm also trying to remember how I felt about Bot in the rotation. L says I was not opposed to it (she was, though).
This is an interesting line in the Cleveland/Chicago games:
-D. Dellucci stole home, G. Sizemore stole third, J. Carroll stole second
Anyone know how this happened?
If my calx are cx, Millar's OPS tonight is 3.250
well if you steal home, the other two dudes better advance...
the ol' triple steal
Wow. Triple steal.
Oh cock. Big throw by Abreu guns down Millar.
Bad Cabin Mirror. No biscuit.
Amalie Benjamin just winked at me.
Salty doubles with no outs.
Hinske impersonates Lugo and grounds into an rbi doubleplay.
I know I'm a little late here with this one, but I was just catching up. There is one really signifigant difference between that and Lugo.
RBI anything
Ok, we go bottom 8, tied. Put 'em away, O-Birds. Oriole Magic and whatnot.
Varquez sac bunts and reaches anyway. First and third with no outs in the top of the 8th.
*Vazquez
Kinsler singles. 8-5 Tex.
Hurray, Rangers put up some insurance 8-5,
1st and 2nd with no one out...
If it was a DP, no rib-eye for Hinske either.
Adam Dunn hit a home run OUT of Great American Ballpark.
Orioles announcers mentioned that Bynum shouldn't bunt to Rodruigez, BUT the fielding bible rated him the worst 3rd basemen at fielding bunts last year (with Dr. Doubles the best).
I wish the real game would start already. I only have about an hour left in awakeland.
Hamilton grandslam. 12-5 Tex.
Hamilton SLAM!
Hurray!!!!
3 errors tonight for the Yankeees??? LMAO. Just saw that.
Fucking Mora.
ok people, I gotta go announce our game on YouCastr. See you on the airwaves. Or not. Or something.
Fucking Damon.
Baltimore's starting to get drenched and pummeled by a thunderboomer.
You can't teach striking out after failing to bunt twice. Some people just have it.
NESN.
Good e'en ladies and dudes.
pouring at camden. but umps gotta let the mfy take the lead before they call out the tarp. it's tradition.
I was hoping I might at least make it to the beginning of our game, but I have to be up at 5, and this cold just won't quit. I think I should take my NyQuil now and not let myself get sucked in to watching the game. Shame the XM's in the car - I could go to sleep listening to it!
Enjoy guys.
O no. Goadjilla vs.
Girardi's scared about a little bit of rain.
Instant classic today in Wisconsin.
D3 National Championship game - Johns Hopkins vs. Trinity
Hopkins takes the lead in the top of the 9th, 4-3.
Bottom 9, 1 out - Longmeadow, MA's Kent Graham singles to get the rally started.
Next guy singles to put runners on first and third. The runner on first steals 2nd, putting runners on 2nd + 3rd with 1 out. They intentionally walk the next guy, then strike out the following hitter.
With the bases loaded & 2 out, Trinity got 2 consecutive walks to win it 5-4. The last at-bat was a Yook-esque 11 pitch struggle.
Awesome game.
Rain > Matsui
Millar likes to make the last out on offense and defense.
Chocolate Rain and rain rain in BAL.
Wow, Kent does it again! That's great, Joe. I will have to call his parents. (Thanks for posting that. Even if I am the only one who really cares.)
don't worry - we'll lead the team to victory, sarah.
Sarah, feel better. Nyquil rules, I'm hitting mine at 11.
No problem Amy. :)
If you're interested in reading the whole write up I did, go to nsnavs.com
:)
batista
48.1 IP
65 hits
31 walks
.325 opp avg
which sounds good for us, but he may also throw a 2-hit shutout.
I will check it out, Joe.
Sarah, feel better. Laura, you better?
Sterling: Hey Carlos, what does the Dopplar show?
Carlos (producer dude): About 45 minutes or so.
Waldman: Wait... Does that thing actually say it'll be 45 minutes?
Sterling: Well, he can gauge rain.
Hurray! Red Sox...
Come on dusty
FUCK YEAH!
do we play 3 or 4 @ SEA?
Thanks Amy, I'm getting there. Beginning and end of day are yucky, so I'm fading out right now. But it's just a cold. I'm trying to be adult about it. :)
Or should I say I'm trying to be a woman about it? Men are such babies about colds. Reverse sexism. I know. Zap me now.
3 -- off thurs
Papi tried to obliterate that picth.
Speaking of Flo: He's the leading vote-getter for the AL side of the all-star game.
Voting so far:
1B - Youk
2B - FY
3B - Slappy
SS - CI
LF - MBM
CF - Ichiro
RF - Vlad
C - Tek
Thursday night (late) Amanda & I leave for our mini-trip to New York. good time for an off day.
Glad to hear it, Laura. Colds in the warm weather are worse than in the winter. And I won't dare say anything about men being babies around here!
manny being yook
Don't you dare question my male manliness of manhood.
why do the Mariners have a Moosecot?
gah
Believe me, Joe, I am not questioning anything! Since I seem to be the only healthy woman around here tonight, I am not taking any chances.
Because they're from Washington?
Some kid picked him in a contest in the 1990s.
hahahaha
So there is a rain delay in the bottom of the ninth in Baltimore? What happens if they cannot finish with the score tied? They replay the whole game or just the last half inning?
How set in stone is this voting process for the all-star game? If there are 5 Red Sox players who are voted in as starters, does that mean they will start? Or does MLB do anything to prevent 5 from one team from starting?
DiceK--no walks. Please.
At least you're here, Amy. I've been having to use earmuffs to protect my sheltered self from these animals where there are no ladies around to keep us in check...
I very rarely get colds. So I guess I'm entitled to complain a bit.
After I get done questioning everyone's manly manhoodery.
Joe, is this the concert trip or the walking around doing stuff trip?
At least you're here, Amy. I've been having to use earmuffs to protect my sheltered self from these animals where there are no ladies around to keep us in check..
Not my fault Amalie Benjamin winked at me...
No hits either. I meant to say.
Fucking Ichiro.
i think they would start the game at the point it was stopped.
Fucking Matsuzaka.
I read through the thread from the other night when it was just the guys, and yes, Patrick, the mice do play when the cat's away.
FWIW, I am a big baby when I have a cold. But don't tell Harvey I admitted to that.
Cincinnati's Jay Bruce... MLB debut: 3 for 3, 2 runs, 2 RBI
Did someone say Amalie Benjamin? Amalie is dreamy! <3
i think they would start the game at the point it was stopped.
Thanks. I know that happened before (rain delay of a tied game), but couldn't recall what was done.
Did someone say Amalie Benjamin? Amalie is dreamy! <3
Unfortunate for her when she has to sit next to Heidi Watney, though.
I won't tell him. :)
I also scrolled through the woman-less thread. Heidi this, Heidi that, blah blah blah.
Very funny, Patrick.
I don't find any of the male announcers attractive at all.
Shit. Come on, DiceK.
Bah. crap
Fucking Sox.
Reds designated Scott Hatteberg for assignment today...
But Amalie is smart, can write, and actually knows about baseball. That should win her some major points.
But of course not next to HEIDI...
Did you say Heidi, L-Girl? Heidi is dreamy! <3
I also scrolled through the woman-less thread. Heidi this, Heidi that, blah blah blah.
...were the Red Sox winning or losing that game?
L, sorry I missed your question.
This is the walk-around-seeing-stuff trip.
"I don't find any of the male announcers attractive at all."
There's a reason for that.
Did you question Heidi's brilliance, L? She clearly knows the game like the back of her hand.
Or something.
TEX - 250 000 050 |12 16 0
FKR - 020 201 010 |06 10 1
I am glad that I wasn't around for the guy who was "combining" Jeemer and Papelbon. That was much more offensive than the Heidi stuff.
Who was drafted in the 43rd round in 1989?
Your three choices are:
Jeff Bagwell
Frank Thomas
Jason Giambi
"There's a reason for that."
They're ugly?
Joe, let me know what you see, I love to hear about people's NYC trips.
"...were the Red Sox winning or losing that game?"
No idea. It was the We Want Heidi show.
Well, since they don't pick the male announcers based on their knowledge or wit, they could at least pick them for their looks.
FUCK.
"I don't find any of the male announcers attractive at all."
I would think Remy would be attractive, with those big cheeks and all. He'd be able to collect a lot of acorns for the winter haul.
That was much more offensive than the Heidi stuff.
Wait, you found that offensive?
Damn, no Ococ magic that time.
Although we did get a "full bore" sighting out of it.
Fucking humans.
"No idea. It was the We Want Heidi show."
We were losing. And not getting any hits.
Puh-leez, I wonder what would happen if there was a Ladies Night at JoS
don: "crisp was diving full bore"
i have not heard him use full bore in a long time
I must have said the water was clean or dirty at some point...
You *weren't* offended by that??
LOL about Remy the chipmunk.
Nah, not the Heidi stuff. But the other thing, yeah.
I wonder what would happen if there was a Ladies Night at JoS
We Want Jacoby Show.
By what? the communal crush on heidi?
I didn't find anything offensive about the Heidi stuff. Lust is fine with me, if a bit mystifying sometimes.
Acorns! :)
The water was clean that night. I remember saying the highlight of the game was the bullpen for us. And Ish disagreed saying the highlight was Heidi.
i would think Remy would be attractive, with those big cheeks and all. He'd be able to collect a lot of acorns for the winter haul.
in that case, zimmer must be the sexiest man on earth.
Uh oh, Ladies Night? Now you are in trouble! :)
By what? the communal crush on heidi?
heidi crush != offensive
japanese slurs = offensive
just so we're clear
oops double post
Like I said, the Heidi stuff didn't offend me at all, just boring.
It was that other thing about Jeemer and Pap.
Well, since they don't pick the male announcers based on their knowledge or wit, they could at least pick them for their looks.
That dame makes a good point.
Yeah, don't be callin us ladies.
Hos, bitches, gals, girls. But not ladies!!
Wait, is the Heidi thing offensive to you or not? I'm confused
:p
meanwhile, K!
I'm trying desperately to ignore this game right now...
Hos night at JoS
You *weren't* offended by that??
Heidi stuff, I meant. The nicknames were dumb. I'm not sure I'd say it offends me personally, but that'd just be arguing semantics. If I were Japanese I'd be offended. etc etc.
"Like I said, the Heidi stuff didn't offend me at all, just boring."
Boring? But her reports are so intriguing and so full of useful information about the game.
I'll concede that Jappelbon is offensive.
does everyone know what != means?
allan wants to know
Boring? But her reports are so intriguing and so full of useful information about the game.
And somehow we keep having a hard time remembering them all.
Heidi stuff: boys being boys.
There's some sexism for you all. :)
that was my friend Grant who posted that.
he felt really bad about it, and told me so afterward.
Wow, 175 comments through the first innings, albeit half were made before the game started.
Yes, what does "!" mean?
I had no idea what != means. But since your prior post said you were not offended, I assume it is some kind of negative symbol.
Or else I am very confused.
"If I were Japanese I'd be offended."
I don't have to be the target of the slur to be offended at racism, homophobia, etc. Wrong is wrong.
"Boring? But her reports are so intriguing and so full of useful information about the game."
New euphemism: useful information. Intriguing reports. Wow, her reports are so intriguing...
" Heidi stuff: boys being boys.
There's some sexism for you all. :)"
And Heidi's lack of knowledge about baseball = girls being girls? :-p
I kid, I kid.
I've been impressed by Cairo's defense at first base.
This time last night it was the 4th inning.
Euphemism? But NESN hired her for her sick reporting skills
!= means a = with a line through it. not equal to. maybe it's some old lady thing no one uses anymore.
special delivery for miguel cairo ...
it's a bowl of dicks!!!
ENJOY!
It's a Jeterism to praise Heidi for her reporting...
That sounded decent off the bat. Bah.
grant doesn't need to feel bad, he was cool with it afterwards. although I did cringe when I saw he told allan to calm down.
although I did cringe when I saw he told allan to calm down.
I think everyone did.
I usually use =/= for 'is not equal to'
Alternatively, my friend uses <>, a symbol he coined, which means 'is less or greater than,' and thus in mathematical terms means 'is not equal to.'
i need to stop hanging out with so many math majors.
I don't have to be the target of the slur to be offended at racism, homophobia, etc. Wrong is wrong.
Yeah. I was just taking the word literally.
maybe it's some old lady thing no one uses anymore.
Not for this old lady. I thought it was some new fangled younger generation thing.
"And Heidi's lack of knowledge about baseball = girls being girls?"
Banned for life!
201's coming fast tonight.
That's not me calling out 201 like I did last night.
can everyone see this:
≠
?
"I think everyone did."
I know I did.
Grant is incredibly nice (to a fault), he's also very naive and probably didn't even realize that a lot of people wold take offense to that.
nice catch manny
